It has gotten to the point that I will only answer calls from numbers that I know. The other calls go to the answering machine and it is very rare when a message is left.

I know it's probably not legal to do, but when I USED to get these calls two times a week I resorted to a portable boat horn - I answered the phone, wait for the computer dialing to turn the call over to a person and wait to hear what they are calling about and if not desired let them have it. Calls stopped after the third blast.

Also, I found a password manager called LastPass. So far pretty slick program.

Welcome to the forums!

I'm curious, though. . . if you don't have a single computer in the house, how do you log onto Airforums?

i like the "murder detective" scenario. "I am Detective Tracy. We traced this number having called numerous times. Who are you? How did you know the deceased?" There is more but it usually ends there with a hangup.

Heck, I believe there is a scam on this very page of Air Forums. The ad says "Important Message A required driver is missing Fix Now" Press that button and watch the malware invade your PC.

I was a bunch nervous when I gave my PC to the Best Buy Geek Squad overnight to clean up some viruses I picked up from a Cannon camera website. Maybe those Geeks have all of my personal information?

Twice my credit card number has been stolen. Luckily Visa figures I'm not the type to purchase fancy TVs in California and immediately cancelled the card number.

The information age has sure opened a whole new realm for crooks.

The very simple answer to the whole problem.

First of all if you can afford a computer and internet connection, I'm sure you have or can afford voicemail or an answering machine and caller ID. So make sure you have it and know how to use it.

This is the key:
NEVER NEVER NEVER....etc answer the phone, if you do not absolutely know who is calling.

If it is important they will leave a voice message.

Not only will you avoid nearly all of this, you will gain back the time you would have wasted dealing with crooks.

I have not yet heard of one of these scams that has left a voicemail with a call back number. Further more if they did, this gives you time to think and research if necessary before getting sucked in.

If everyone acted this way, these annoying Robo calls would go away.

The new call deal is survey but really solicitation. If recording I lay phone down later it disconnects hang up back in serv. they pay for call phone co. made no chge. to me, if live call I say go **** yourself , end of call, they never call again. If I did not originate call I did not break any porn laws that I no of. I don't have to be polite to them, I also do this to political calls. If some one has knowledge that I am breaking porn phone laws, post on forums the law.

I have my 'landline' using a company called Ooma. Similar to Vonage. Great service if you have cable to the house. Best part is that they have custom Blacklists. Open up your account on their website, look at the call logs. Anything I see that shows no message I mark as spam/junk/crap and the next time they call I never hear it. Caller gets a message that the number is disconnected. I check it about once a week. Five minutes and I am done. Really helpful in election season

I hate to admit this but I fell for the "Microsoft Bug" scam about three years ago. After about 15 minute they were inside my computer. Boy was that ever scary, seeing my mouse move and I was not the one moving it. Then they started asking for money to fix what I considered a non problem. That is when I realized that I had been had. I hung up, but it took about a week to get my computer sorted out and back to normal. They still call 3 or 4 times a year.

Actually, there is one (maybe more) that depends on their call going to voice mail. If it doesn't, they plead a wrong number. This particular company claims to be a collection agency which is tired of being ignored, and this is their last call before they sue you. Naturally, they leave a call back number.

We had a voice mail from this outfit, and since we don't owe anybody any money, my first thought was don't call them back, do a little internet research first. Turns out leaving a voice mail is the first part of their selection process; anybody who calls them back is assumed to have sucker potential.

If you are seeing something like this. I encourage you to go to malwarebytes.org and download their free malware checker. It's pretty good at finding and removing everyday malware and tracking cookies.

Thanks Janet. I was infected with a malware I believe I picked up on a Canon camera website looking for the software for my new camera. I purchased webroot which seems to be effective so far. Thanks for the tip on free malwarebyutes.

Scams are a costly nuisance. They have been around forever, e.g. snake oil or Florida land. We just got to be careful.

I just get pure T aggravated at the sheer number of calls. I don't pay for a free advertising line into my house. So out it went and the hell with the local phone company!
