Ever deliver a baby in your Airstream?

Anyone ever deliver or help deliver a baby in their Airstream?

Tried to convince my pregnant wife, who's going the home birth route, that it might be cool to be able to tell our daughter she was born in an Airstream. I told her we could just pull the trailer in the driveway, invite the mid-wife and doula in, and we'd be set.The wife is absolutely NOT going for it!

She just doesn't want to scare the neighbors.

Put some crime scene tape around the trailer, that will keep the neighbors at a safe distance.

Tell your wife that this method is highly preferred. Storks are trained professionals, they are well insured and have their own union. If your wife persists with her plan to do a home delivery herself, they could file a grievance - don't mess with union....

In some parts of the country - usually lower income areas, babies are deposited under cabbage leaves to be found by wanna be parents. This practice however, is rapidly disappearing as the stork union becomes an ever more aggressive organization. Babies themselves have on occasion, filed suit against wanna be parents who arrived at the appointed pickup area late, thus exposing the baby to unnecessary roughage, cabbage beetles and other vegetable hazards.

I suppose that it could be possible to have a baby delivered by a stork (who couldn't fly) in a vehicle - but i imagine they would not need to tow a trailer behind as babies aren't usually very large. Where you expecting a large baby?

Stick with the storks - they are like pizza delivery folks - no hassle, 30 minutes or it's free and don't' forget to leave a tip.

Home birth, particularly for other than a first child is quite safe, given that you have an experienced midwife and access to emergency care should something go wrong.

However I'd advise against the Airstream too. First, they call it LABOR for a reason, and your wife might want to pull lights out of the walls, etc. when in the middle of a contraction. Secondly, she needs to have SPACE for the midwife, assistant, husband and any other family that may wish to participate. Even a 34 classic can be too crammed in for that.

Lastly if she does have to go the hospital during or after delivery, that narrow door and steps are totally unsuitable.

If you'd like to know what labor feels like, just take your upper lip and stretch it over your head. After that, you can ask your wife to use the airstream for a delivery room.

Good luck how exciting for you both! Is this your first?

I didn't deliver my son in an Airstream, but we did take the baby (3 mos) camping down to NC (to see his grandparents who couldn't travel). It was good for the eternally grateful grandparents and kinfolk, us too of course.
Such a long trip though, I don't know, knowing what I know now, if I'd do it that way again. I was so glad we had the Airstream instead of motels, etc. It was just the long time driving that was hard and the heat...

I have given birth to 3 children of my own. I would not advise giving birth in your airstream unless you want to gut it and redo it after the baby is born. Unlike what you see on tv... It is a REALLY messy affair. You would have to cover the inside of the trailer with heavy duty plastic wrap first.

Have fun with your new addition. It's one of the best things in life.

All - Just want to give a heart felt thanks for the humerous (and serious) replies. I just finished sharing this post/thread with my wife and we both laughed out loud at least ten times while reading it.

Just so everyone knows our due date is tomorrow. Now that doesn't actually mean the baby is going to come tomorrow - but we should see our baby girl within the next week.

No, seriously! My daughter is truly one of the greatest gifts I could ever have hoped for .... I saw "My big fat greek wedding", and although it is MANY years off - I CRIED like a baby at the thought of having to "give her away" ....

Congratulations She will such a joy for about 15 years and then she becomes a wonder. I am sure she will be a winner. With smart parents (airstream owners) how could she anything else, besides a winner.

My sentiment precisely. And now mine have given me 5 grand-daughters. Same angsts: boys, acne, weight, school tests, etc and none of them wants to learn how to use a digital multimeter....
Just one boy would have been good! (But I'm just grateful the girls are healthy, of course)
