Just changed the oil and air cleaner and oil and noticed the foam type stuff is crumbling that lines and soundproofs the generator compartment.

How have others reinsulated/soundproofed? thanks, jem

We insulated our genset box with duct insulation. We went to a hvac place and bought it from him. It is fairly pricey. It's the stuff used to quiet ducting in a building, goes inside the ductwork. Used a spray on contact cemnet to apply it. The black stuff is not very thick, and cuts easily with a carpet knife.

Mine is no longer insulated. The stuff that Airstream used just disintegrated. I have some of the doghouse insulation kit left over from CW. This stuff worked great on the doghouse so I am going to get some more to do the genset. If you want to have it be really soundproof there is a lead sheet insulation that is supposed to work wonders. I just would worry about the weight.

I used a felt/foil/hardware cloth combo, which will last for many years to come.
The old foam insulation is some nasty stuff. I found it everywhere in the generator after I pulled it.
To do the job right and gain access to the compartment, the generator should be pulled.
Sounds like a big job, but only takes about an hour, if you have some kind of platform to pull the genny on to. I use an old wooden tool box with casters.

Heat and sound require different insulations, if you want to reduce both you will need 2 layers. Outfits like Cotronics and Pacor sell ceramic papers and paint which will reduce the heat. Lead or asphalt sheets will reduce vibrations and are available from audio suppliers, B-quiet and Parts Express are a couple.

You also might try Cool and Quiet, they make insulation for the hot rodders. Just make sure the insulation is rated for the heat and petroleum products it will come in contact with, a generator compartment is pretty nasty.
