Using a press fit is anteresting way to hold a ball joint in place.

More info on GMs ball joint installation/removal tools.

It looks like GM changed the adapter combinations over the years. I've looked through the factory service manuals for 1974, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1984 and came up with the following information. It seems if you use the -9 adapter for installation you need to modify the press. I'd rather not do that so I'll be on the lookout for -2 and -29 adapters.

Between 74 and 77 the service manuals called for the following:
J-9519-7 for removal
J-9519-9 for installation
J-9519-10 press but for the install you had to modify the press by cutting off some of the platen and using a 2-5/8" x 3" ID water pipe extension.

Between 78 and 80 (or later) the service manuals called for the following:
J-9519-2 for removal
J-9519-29 for removal
J-9519-16 for installation
J-9519-10 press with no modifications.

Sometime in the 80s (84 for sure) the service manuals called for the following:
J-9519-16 for removal
J-9519-22 for removal
J-9519-13 for removal
J-9519-9 for installation
J-9519-10 press with no modifications.

Edit: What's interesting is for 1984 you are supposed to use the -9 for installation but for some reason there is no need to modify the -10 Press. I'm not sure I understand the logic as to why in 1984 no mod is required (same ball joints) but in 1974 you had to modify the press when using the -9.

I'll know for sure one way or the other once I start working on the front suspension.

Brad

Brad, I suspect that -9 and -16 are similar. My 86 shop manual calls for -9 and my 82 manual calls for -16.
I see stress marks on my -16 on the outer ring and wonder if -9 is a stronger version.

Peter, the -9 adapter is pretty darn stout. I'd be surprised if it could/would develop stress cracks.

I'll take some measurements of the -9 next time I'm in the shop and post them here.

Any idea of what adapters are included in the 'current' J-9517-E kit (described as a lower ball joint remover & installer kit for GM/Isuzu)?

The only number I can make out is the -17 which I've not seen a reference to that number in the factory service manuals for the P-30.

If you haven't already you could try contacting the seller and ask him to provide you with a numerical listing of the adapters. From what I can see this same press (-10) seems to have been used on a million different GM vehicles.

My best guess is the -E in the part number probably designates which series of vehicles the kit will work with.

Not much help am I!

Paranoia...I had a distinct "Klonk" on the right side, when I was applying the brakes. Beside the steering play many people complain about, there is a sense rutting of the tire.
The way to check them is very fast and easy.
Jack vehicle up 1 side at a time. Take a long crow bar to pry the tire up and down (not sideways, since that is normal wheel bearing play). check if there is any up and down movement within the lower ball joint. Tolerance is minimal, so if you see any get rid of them.
The upper don't get that same kind of abuse, but i replaced mine anyway...you know ..whilst.
Since I have hardly any play in the steering, the ball joint made a huge improvement. The passenger side one was shut the drivers side very loose. I even took the PO for a ride and he could not believe the difference.
