AS for the type of steel... I no sure. It's not galvanized for sure. I've just received some POR 15 to seal it up.

The rust making it look thicker makes sense also coats of paint, though from what I have seen of painted rv frames I find that a bit hard to believe POR-15 is the only way to go, we just finished the frame on a 57 Chevy with that stuff, make sure you don't get too much on you...it has to wear off
