I'm going to try and call and see how bad this really is since I'm leaving soon for a 3 week 3000 mile trip out west. There's no way I'll get into the dealer before the trip. I may just remove the spare and put it in the bed of the truck and hope that the weld isn't really bad.
If I were you I would inspect the holder and if it looked ok I would roll with it and just keep an eye on it. Or you could do as you said and just put the spare in the bed of your truck. You could also with just two bolts remove the stair rack altogether.

But over all enjoy your trip.

Here’s a blog post that may help explain.

I wish that ours was so well behaved. It squeals, groans, and grinds - going up and down - when it's pretty well extended. I hope our camping neighbors don't think I'm abusing a family pet (!)

And a shot of the Grand Tetons from Gros Ventre campground outside of Jackson, WY:

Spare Tire Holder Recall

We received the recall notice on the spare tire holder weld issue as well. Really bad timing as we are leaving on a road trip today. Called our AS dealer & they knew nothing about it. Seems like it would be a good idea for AS to inform their dealers before sending out a recall notice! 😡

I would just inspect frequently or remove the rack place spare in TV and roll. This should not be a reason to mess up travel plans
Just my thoughts

There have been recurring problems with that Dometic fridge in recent-model 23s. Mine was replaced under warranty after the door fell off (fixed by dealer) and, weeks later, the fridge quit entirely. Something about a failed circuit board. My brother had the same problem last month in his 2019 19’ FC and it also was replaced under warranty.

Got the new board installed, at first thought ok, that did not fix it! But it DID throw a different code to the check light. Pulled the top board, all readings were as called out in the service guide. Was testing the cable between the boards (again!) noticed one pin seemed recessed. Reseated it, snapped it all back together and before I could pick up the volt meter I had FLAME! So I guess I have a spare lower board and a working fridge. Other than a bit of time I have about what it would have cost in fuel to tow her to and from the dealer invested so it kind of evens out. Now, will it still be working tomorrow??

Night all

The things we learn and skills we pick up working on these things has got to be worth what we pay for them.
Glad you got it up and going and some parts for the road kit.

Still running,
It ran all night on propane, 6am hooked up AC, it switched over, after breakfast unplugged it and it switched back to gas. Looks like all is well.
I may put the old lower board back in this afternoon, just for the sake of KNOWING if it was part of the problem.

How are things in Alabama? I want to go back and spend a little time on Dolphin island. I remember a fantastic sunset on the west end of there years ago.

Home Again

Well, we are home again from another week in the Airstream. For the most part it was yet another flawless trip..... for the most part.
Our, as of yesterday, Happy 16th Birthday, 16 year old Daughter had cheer camp this past week at a college about 2 hours from our home so we desided to set up our Airstream at a campground close to the campus, so we could be within striking distance if needed. My wife helped make sure the girls had what they needed throughout the week and we kept them all stocked with ice, gatoraid, late night pizza and ice cream.
Only issue we had with the trailer, as some of you are already aware was our MicroAir Easy Start decided it was going to give up the ghost, so I had to do a little campground rooftop on the road repair, and uninstall it. Being able to hustle up a 10’ Ladder from campground maintenance was a trip saver. I gotta get me one of those telescoping extension ladders to keep in the truck, as this is the second time I’ve had to be on the roof for something while on the road. Xtend and climb ladder.
https://xtendandclimb.com/
Anyway...
Kevin at MicroAir was super nice and I’ll be sending my unit out for a full colonoscopy tomorrow.
MicroAir makes a great product and I have only found (1) other who has had one fail. With as many of those things that are out there that’s a huge testament to there quality.
I mentioned flawless trip earlier, and I guess it was, nothing Airstream original failed, and the trip was pretty smooth.
Anyway there is hope to have a Airstream that provides reliable service, it just takes a little time to work the bugs out.

Hi all.

My wife and I just finished our first big trip. We did 2,450 miles on the road (from Minneapolis) to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons over a 13 day period. Going up the Beartooth Highway was quite the adventure and going down through the Tetons - with 5+ miles of 10% grade - seemed really hard on the brakes (and maybe the transmission).

We have acclimated to the small bed together. Would prefer a bigger bed, but can't get a bigger trailer because of driveway size constraints at home.

Only one big incident. While on the road, my wife needed to use the bathroom. So she used the trailer, but forgot to turn the pump off. On some bumpy road, the kitchen faucet opened itself up. Since we had the cutting board on the sink, the freshwater tank (half full) emptied itself all over the place. We have a big rug that soaked up most of the water and I don't think there was any long-term harm. After I thought we were 100% dried out, though, I had about 4 ounces of water drain out of a seam in the belly pan when I lowered the tongue jack. Is it normal for a little water to accumulate in the belly?

We keep a list of things we want to modify or purchase, etc. On a few of our ideas, we could use some input:

  • I'd like to add a second E-Z Hose Carrier right next to the factory installed one so that I don't have a hose in the bumper. Should I have any fear about drilling into the belly to add the carrier? Has anyone else done this?
  • I am also thinking of adding a 30" PVC tube to the A-frame to hold my Blue Ox sway bars when they're not in use. Has anyone done this?
  • My wife would like more counter space. Thinking of adding a flip-up shelf somewhere and/or making a prep surface solution on top of the lower pantry pull-out. I see all of the marvelous things you guys do with Corian and laminates, but I just don't have those skillsets. Are there any aftermarket products that people can suggest?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I’ve added two E-Z hose carriers under our trailer. One on the street side next to the factory one and I also added a second shorter one on the curb side just behind the steps to hold our marshmallow roasting sticks and flamingo legs.

Did you attach those directly to the belly sheet metal or did you look for an area of the belly with some sort of support/bracing behind it? Sheet metal screws? Thanks
