Box On Back?

We have this box on our 59 overlander we were wondering if it is original? It does not look like the frame has been welded or cut.
Thanks

Yup seen one of them before, its a firewood box, or a holder for 200 feet of sewer hose, or a place for the kids to ride in, and you can mount a spare tire to it to boot! Just having fun as no one else has posted, and welcome to the forums!Seems as there's a nice group of Airstreamers in your neck of the woods. DG

Original as did it come from the factory? Unlikely. It will have been added by one of the previous owners some where along the way.

Welcome to the forums! The '59 Overlander is a nice vintage rig. That box is not original from the factory. A word of caution about loading up the box with heavy gear or mounting bikes on the back of the box. You need to be careful about adding any extra weight on the rear bumper. The added weight adds additional stress to the trailer.

Speaking or a rear box.....

I recently had a customer who wanted a quote on Zip-Dee awnings all-around for his new Safari 25 FB LE. In walking around, I noticed a nice, BIG diamond plate aluminum box sitting on the back bumper. It was maybe 5' across, 2' deep and 3' high.

'Nice storage area' I said as we did the measuring......'where did you get it?' I asked. 'Oh, my brother has a machine shop and he made it for me and welded it to the bumper'. 'Really' I replied.

Well, since this 'expert' seemed to know everything about his new Airstream.....even though THIS WAS HIS FIRST TRAILER (former MoHo owner), I decided to keep quiet about the possible problems his box will cause with the frame, not to mention it's NEGATIVE effect on the tongue weight and the probable handling degradations that come with it. He wouldn't want to hear the facts anyway!

PS: He said that the prices I gave him for the awnings were 'way too high'. Just goes to show ya'!

Looks like a big pipe brace attached behind the box.

I do not think box is orginal, but I do not see how the frame was lengthened to make it fit. It looks like the orginal frame is that long, as I do not see any cuts or welds. Its all one piece sticking out of body.
