my new to me 1958 22' flying cloud international

all,

well i must have an addiction - over the past 3 months i've purchased a '65 26' overlander, '68 26' overlander, '77 31' sovereign and yesterday this 1958 22' flying cloud international.

the 58 tows great and is gutted with new marine plywood floors installed by previous owner - shell is in excellent condition but interior wiring and was cut out at receptacles and will take some doing to figure out and test. i also need window handle hardware as well as the vent handles and one vent is missing the complete cylinder hardware to open.

i'll have lots of questions when i begin restoring this 58 but for now i am working on my 68 overlander and should be finished in 4-5 weeks.

regards to all

That looks more like a 59 or 60, based on the L77 door handle & the window configuration. It looks like a California built model, so they may have started some of those items at the end of the 58 production though.
Good luck with it,
Colin

here are some of the tags

it would be great if it were a 59 but title says 58 - i was born in 59 and i have a 59 porsche.

here is the vin plate and other id plates in front of trailer below front window - also my 59 porsche 356 super sunroof coupe that i restored 20 years ago - still looks and drives great!:

According to the archives on vintageairstream.com , your trailer is either a 59 or 60, but definitely not a 58. If you take the print out of this, you may be able to convince the DMV.

I was always under the impression that the L-77 lock assembly was only used in the '59 and '60 year models.
But in my sales of L-77 replacement handles, I have had at least 4 that were ordered for either a '58 or a '61 model year.
It appears that A$ overlapped in both directions on a few models.

great advice and information i appreciate it. happy to know that it may very well be a '59

on the upper front id plate it shows stamped numbers "559"

could this be 5/59 build date - any relevance?

Yeah, that could happen, but I've never seen evidence of it. The windows are all "clearview" type & Hehr Standard windows (like 52-57) were used in 58 on the sides & smaller clearview's were used on the front & rear in 58. The serial number doesn't fit for a 58 either.

Right on the plaque it states... 559 in the lower right... witch means may or 5 month of 59!

Perhaps some state DMV's originally titled the coach based on the manufacture date instead of the model year. But I would think that would only apply to the '58's.
Were the doors the same on the '58 and '61 model years as the '59 and '60 model years?

Yeah, except for the handles.

The VIN #22D-0223 and the 559 seem to indicate it is a California Flying Cloud that had a double bed built in May of 1959. Here's a '59 brochure.

Also, I don't believe the International globe plaque was used in 1958. I'd try to get it switched over at the DMV...I too am a '59 model.

Check this out for other '59 FC's.

Regardless of the year…have fun with it!
