Specifically, O6027 decides as a 1954 22' Safari built in Ohio. It is not a 22' Flying Cloud. Totally different interior layout/floor plan. Ohio built 22-footers as both Safari's and Flying Clouds in 1954. California built only Flying Clouds.
Thanks so much Joe. I really appreciate that. Very helpful!
Cheers

OK, thanks, looks like i have a 55 then. I did read on here that whale tails were exterior panels only, or maybe i read it wrong, because i have WT panels in and out. Any comment on that one? thanks in advance ,Randy

Bubba is correct at least some 1954 to early 1957 whale tail California trailers came with whale tail rear interior endcaps, but I have not studied that detail, so I cannot say if they all did or only some did.

1955 Flying Cloud to add to registry

We bought a '55 Flying Cloud about 12 years ago to park and use as an extra room for one of our kids that needed a place to live for a couple of years. We're now starting to renovate the beast and attempt to get it back on the highway. Lots of work ahead, but excited to be doing it finally!

We will list your 55 FC on the Registry today. If you are planning to renovate the 55, please consider starting a renovation thread so we can follow along with your progress. If you have any questions on the parts and pieces, if I don’t know the answer, someone else will. Good luck

Good luck,
The bones were done. New axle, electric brakes, tongue, new 7 gallon propone tanks, gray and black tanks, plumbing, electrical, tankless water heater, AC, 2 fantastic fans. Interior has new floor and uphostery, rear bed and toliet. Wood work in excellent shape. I just removed stove and ref (too old) and replaced with retro style. One issue, trailer sways way too much. looking for solution. Also, I dont know how tostart a tread

Scroll down to the very bottom blue bar on the page and click on "Site Map". Scroll down the list of threads to the Flying Cloud section (under the Airstream Knowledgebase) and click on "1950-1955 Flying Cloud" (under Flying Cloud). A new list will display and again click on "1950-1955 Flying Cloud" that follows "View Full Version:". This takes you to a list of all the threads in the 1950-1955 Flying Cloud forums; click on the "New Thread" button on the left and above the title on the page.

You have one of the first few 1954 22' Flying Clouds built in Ohio. It was built on March 12, 1954. Ohio had only added the sloped rear to increase the Flying Cloud from 21' to 22' in January 1954.

Found out that this flying cloud was the first prototype for the whale tale. It was scheduled for the airstream museum. Top rear is like others but then it drops straight down. Apparently, they were trying to figure outt the profile.

twood, that’s interesting. I thought the only whale tail that Ohio had a hand in was Wally’s 1955 Bubble. So yours is a whale tail with an Ohio plant number 03199? Thanks

Ohio never built any whale tail, not for Wally, not on a Bubble. All whale tails were built in California. BTW, Wally's 1955 Bubble, with the magnesium frame, was built in California - it has a California serial number.

I did examine a California Flying Cloud with a whale tail at the Airstream Club International Rally this summer that is the lowest serial number I have ever seen with a whale tail. I wonder if that is the unit mentioned in this thread. The angle of slope for the rear window was more than the angle of slope for the aluminum panel below the rear window suggesting they were trying to figure out how to fit it all together. That suggests that the trailer I saw could be a "prototype", or at least a very early 1954 whale tail. I have only seen one other Airstream before with similar mismatched rear angles, but I did not keep notes as to length or serial number.
