Cool Vintage Get Together

Things are really firming up for the get together. We'll have food (probably hot dogs and sausage wraps, etc.) and we will probably have the Austin Banjo Club out there to serenade us (I'm a member). We are to have the local A/S dealer out there with his yellow-painted vintage Bambi. Magnum trailers should be there, also, with some hitch, brake, and axle expertise. Should be some door prizes, also.

This is for everyone, not just WBCCI members. This is not a formal WBCCI event. We would like non-members to meet our folks, but we're not doing this for arm twisting. We want you out there WBCCI member or not, vintage owner or just interested in vintage A/S.

PeterH-79MH and BobbyW

PeterH-79MH

I hear you already have been out to check out the layout and reserve at the RV park. Great. It will be neat to meet you.

BobbyW

Trailer ready or not, I hope you can make it.

I may pull the International out for anyone who hasn't seen the new International yet.

Yes, John, we took a ride out there 1 1/2 weeks ago and I met Myron Fischer. He was working in his yard when we drove by (he has a great piece of property out there). I pulled over and introduced myself and mentioned your name.
We made reservations for Saturday night at the Camper Resort (512-266-1562). They have 45 spots right at the lake.
The campground is a little tricky to find for people not familiar with Hudson Bend.
If anyone plans on going and wants to meet up with us in Austin Saturday morning for the ride out there, please let me know.

A map for those who are coming

Not hard to find at all. Those who want to stay overnight (including me) can stay at the campground at half price.

Anyone who is coming needs to call the numbers listed on this link and say they are coming.

Thumbs up

Confirmed our attendance today with Myron Fischer. I ask him, since our 79MH is 11 month away from being vintage, if he wanted us to be part of the vintage open house afternoon. He said he had a perfect place for us to pull in.
Sounds like it will be a great event.

Weather forecast

According to the long-range forecast, things are looking very good for our vintage weekend. The forecast is for mid-60s and mostly clear skies during the day and low 40s at night. Light winds.

Perfect sweater weather to enjoy the rally during the day and a snug Airstream overnight.

Yesterday was to have been in the 50s, but it must have been warmer than that. I spent the afternoon outdoors in the sun in just a long-sleeve shirt over a T-shirt.

Pahaska,
I need to see if they will have any room for my Minuet, think there is any? I have got all the contact info. I will probably just spend the day there. I am still pretty busy working on my Overlander, taking advantage of the good (cold) weather to get my new roof vent caps on and do some exterior sealing.

Is there room

You need to give Myrion Fischer a call to say you are coming with or without your trailer so that he can plan for how many folks will be there. It is at his place, which I haven't seen yet myself, and he will know the space situation.

His number is 512-266-3488 and more details are on my web page at http://irwin.home.texas.net/HLU-VW.html

Talking Weather

Unfortunately, the forecast has slowly deteriorated over the last week. Currently, it is for a high of 48 and 20% chance of rain. The long range forecast had been for mid 60s and partially cloudy. Well, we're hardy sould (at least some of us).

Tonight will probably be the coldest night of the year; maybe even in the teens here in the hills. I just noticed as I went out for the paper that my neighbor has a garden hose still hooked to an unprotected outside faucet. It is a young couple and maybe they don't know better. I need to put a note on their door to warn them.

As soon as I finish my coffee, I'm going over to the storage yard to bring the Airstream home and putter around in it today. First thing in the AM, I'll put some water in the fresh tank and be on my way to Hudson Bend. Tomorrow night we'll be in the Airstream and it is expected to be in the 40s.

Vintage Rally In Austin

Hi,
We're interested in attending the rally and will be driving in from Montgomery (TX) in the morning. As we do not yet own a trailer (still shopping), can anyone suggest a nearby place to stay?

Thanks,
Cheryl & Carl

Well, guess I am the first to give a report on the vintage meet. I didn't get to bring my Minuet as I sold it and delivered it on Friday afternoon. My Overlander is not quite yet ready for travel so I went trailerless. Doggone it, missed show-n-tell!! The weather was a little wet and cold, probably a nice spring day if you are from the frozen tundra up north. Finally got to see a few of the folks on the forum, Motorhome Peter and John Irwin, who by the way can definitely pick a banjo. Saw a few other folks as well but didn't get to talk with them, I believe the Jackson's from Montgomery and a crazy bunch of WBCCI'ers that drafted the wife and I into the club.

(note to self; research a group called the WBCCI that I just joined)

good times at the Texas Vintage Rally.
The Texas Highland Lakes Unit are a bunch of great people and we enjoyed spending time with them.
Finally got to meet Pahaska (john Irwing) and felt like I knew him all my life. During the great bbq lunch I kept on saying to my wife that I knew this guy on the other table from somewhere. Well, it happened to be Chas, but I never saw him or a picture before.
The star of the show was Bud Cooper with his 1948, who drove 8 hours to attend the rally.
Airstreamforums was mentioned several times as a great source of information.

Bud Coopers 1948

As Peter and Chas have said, the weather was terrible; spitting rain and cold all day. It didn't keep frolks from coming out, though, including some clear from Houston. It was really neat to meet Peter, Chas, Jim Whitworth, et al, and put faces to names. As Peter said, it was like we had known each other for a long time.

During lunch I (along with the rest of the band) played some banjo with stiff fingers.

Peter's motorhome is terrific. I really admire the interior with his Pergo floor and all the beautiful woodwork. Another couple had a Bambi and a B-Van for sale; they had just bought a Classic motorhome in San Angelo but hadn't taken delivery yet.

Without a doubt, the most interesting Airstream at the rally was Bud Cooper's 1948. This was the 5th vintage Airstream that Bud Cooper has restored. I had the enjoyment of sitting across from Bud and his wife at dinner at Rosie's Taco House Saturday night. They are definitely interesting folks to talk to.

The original tube frame of the 1948 was beyond use, so Bud designed and had built a channel frame. The approximately 600 pound shell was then transplanted from the old frame to the new. For authentic appearance, a tube still protrudes from under the rear of the trailer; Bud keeps his sewer hose in it.

Even the construction of the bumper was an interesting tale. At the first attempt, the shop bent the bumper "inside out". Fortunately, Bud could only buy the aluminum channel in 24' lengths, so there was enough material to bend one in the right direction.

The center-mountedtail light is original and is "grandfathered" to be legal. Bud added the turn signals for safety reasons.

Yellow Bird

Camper Clinic brought this "yellow bird" to the rally. The intention is to loan the trailer out to events such as charitable walks and the like where there is a need for a place to count money or keep records.

The interior is in the process of restoration. Notice that there are no propane bottles. Everything is 120v electric. This is so there is no RV expertise required of the loadees and so that the trailer can be used in places like malls where the propane would not be welcome (or legal).

Nice way to get advertising in front of the public and at the same time do a good deed.
