A 2006 f150 with a 7 pin connecter has the tow package. Acually the tow package come with a 4 pin & 7 pin side by side. If you care to crawl under the rear of the truck,on the right side of the rear diff cover will be a metal tab on one of the cover bolts. the tag will be about 3/4" x2", on this tag will be somwe numbers. Right under the bolt shoulder will be the 1st number. you will not be able to read the number without removeing the bolt, you can however infer the first nimber. what you can see will be- .51 or .73 this means with the bolt removed it would read 3.51 or 3.73. this is the axle ratio. A 3.73 would be the best for towing. this truck will have a 5.4, Ford does not make a 5.7. Adios, John

Look Like this F150 will work then.
Took the vin number called a ford dealer had them look up the factory specs....looks like it has a "Heavy Duty Tow Package" installed. It does have the 3.73 ratio. So i'm hoping that my tow rating is up to 9200 pounds.
Do I have the forums blessing!

Yes! Good choice...(I am GM to the bone, but my 2nd choice would be a Ford.)
AirStream=American Icon
Ford F150=American Icon
You dun'well.
Welome...you've made a safe and comfortable choice for pulling that size AS.
Now get out and start Streamin'

tmarquis!!! get the vin number, have the dealer run it through the computer, they can or should be able to pull up the original assembly line specs and tell you if the tow package was factory installed or not. I did that on my 2008 Ram, and it was amazing how that clarified things last week. There is a difference in capacities between factory installed tow package, and those installed by the dealer or others.
Good luck!
Steven

When you get an ok from BillTex you know you're doing well. He loves 3/4 ton trucks, but is smart enough to know your trailer doesn't need one. I wanted you to buy a Tundra (bias alert), but the Ford will work for you. Good work in checking all this out.
Now you can go camping. Oh, got a brake controller? A WD hitch? A whole bunch of other stuff you will be spending on in the next year (buying an RV makes you a one man stimulus package).

Yeah I think I'm going with the F150. I have 5 days to change my mind. I am a toyota fan as well. But I just haven't found one with a tow package. And the dealers are just one more level of BS i have to deal with. Carmax has made things easy.
And yeah maybe a refund is on they way with this stimuli package. I've heard its possible for autos.....maybe RV's as well?

My 2 cents, 2006 F150 a good choice , but I have a heavy Ford bias. Adios, John

Gotta watch out for those used vehicles at the dealers.
The salesman will look at the rear and if they see a hitch. They will assume it has a towing package and boast that even if the only part it has is just the hitch.
Towing packages include much more than just a receiver/hitch.
In the most extreme cases it includes, heavy duty alternator, heavy duty suspension, larger radiator, power steering fluid cooler, Engine oil cooler, Aux trans cooler, Heavy duty battery, 7 wire trailer connector, trailer brake controller wiring harness, heavy duty turn signals,...
In the least it will be a receiver, aux trans cooler,... But those are usually minivans.
For a pickup or larger SUV it includes the longer list of things.

Hi Tom,
I own a 22' Internationl CCD with a GVWR of 5600# and towed it with a 2007 Tacoma with a 4L V6 last summer through Wyoming and Montana and was not at all happy.
The Tacoma had a 5 speed automatic transmission which I generally had to run in fourth gear and could not use my cruise control even on flat roads as it would constantly want to downshift.(always hunting for a gear)
I believe that the suspension in the Tacoma was up to the task but that the engine and transmission were not able to handle this load.
I also concur with moosetags opinion.
Good Luck...Kim

I am in somewhat the same boat.
Hi,
We have just bought an 06 classic. We would like to replace the truck but do not know which way to go. We would like to travel in the mountains. We would also like to get somewhat good fuel economy.
I know there are many tow vehicles out there used for towing, however I don’t have a clue which way to go.
I do not want to rely on a truck salesperson that does not tow himself to guide my decision. I hope some of you folks that have the experience will share your wisdom.

In order to even begin helping, we need to know how long and how heavy your '06 Classic is.
