Will AS ever get this right? I’ve sailed for years on boats with the same basic requirements: 12v at sea and 120v shore power. It is not a topic of discussion because they work.

Hi
Simple answer: Don't worry about it. Your charger isn't putting out all that much current. Clamp the negative any place that's convenient as a solid ground ( battery terminals, either one, are a good bet ). Clamp the positive on the +12 terminal on either battery or on some other upstream battery connection if that is easier to get to.
The only thing to watch is getting a solid connection. Clamping on to a pile of rust / dirt / corrosion is not a great approach. Solid does not mean attaching your 30A charger to a piece of number 10 (or less) wire. The solid connections in an AS are all number 6 or larger.
If you happen to have a 200A charger then the drill is s bit different. Since most folks don't have one, it's not worth diving into. On the other end, if you are playing with a 1.25A trickle charger ... that number 10 wire may be just fine.
