lighting water heater

I have a 1967 Carvel (Littlle Duke) which I am restoring. I can't figure out how to light the water heater with the Bowen/Atwood shroud attacheed. There is no way to get to the control of the lighting point through the access door because of the heat disperser on the inside. The only I can light it is to take the shroud off completely which is ridiculas. Is it possible that the heat disperser was added by some nut?
I will have some original parts like the interior lights and the Thetford 1400 toilet available if anyone is interested.

Without seeing it I am guessing. Someone probably added a shield for just the opposite problem you are having. To keep the wind from blowing it out. It has been commonly done for this purpose. Can you reach it with one of those long lighters that are used to light fireplaces or BBQ pit fires. I keep a couple of those around just for this purpose and lighting my houses gas water heater.

Hey y'all,

I work with alot of gas pilots and what we use to light them with is a Bernz O Matic pistol grip torch. This attachs to a small propane fuel cylinder, all can be found at ACE or Home Depo. This is great for hard to get at pilots. I never go camping with out one, this thing starts anything a blaze. The torch has an adjustable flame from 3/4" to 12" long. Do not use this torch if you have not leak tested the stove, water heater, ect... before lighting the pilot. - Ray
