Installing Zipdee window awnings

There is a line in the Zip Dee install instructions "wide grip rivets permit skin-only mounting of hinges".

I will be cutting down a salvage awning for the streetside and rear window awnings, so I can make them any size I want.

My rear window is riveted into the ribs which is about 44" wide. Should I rivet the hinges into the ribs and have about a 44" wide awning or rivet the hinges into the skin a couple of inches farther out for a wider awning? What do you think. If mount the hinges farther out, a couple of inches of the awning rail at either end will be free floating due to the curve of the back of the trailer,

I realize this is an old thread, but how did those awnings turn out? We are hoping to find street side and rear awnings for ours.

You should never have awning rail floating at ends also IMO this makes a weak point subject to tear loose and cause damage and leaks.
