I need a new awning or my old one repaired.
I have a 66 Overlander. I have the original awning mechanism but no fabric. its in just such a mess. I would like to do this on the cheap and I don't want one of those really expensive power awnings. Where can I go?

You will need a 16' Zip-Dee awning. A&E and CareFree don't have arms that bend to that body style of trailer. If yours was a 1969 or newer trailer, you could also get an A&E, but it isn't.

I have no idea what kind it is. It's the original one. I have a 66 overlander double bed. 26 footer. Zipdee just seems so expensive. I'm thinking about doing the old school one with the poles. But I don't know.

If you've got all the parts but the fabric, go to a company that makes custom tents and/or awnings, and have them cut and sew some Sunbrella fabric to fit.

I would just take it off and carefully store all the parts for future repair. You can take a screw out of the end and slide the accordion apart. That way you can leave the mounting rail in place. I have seen rope and stake awnings on an airstream (very expensive Airstream from TT). But I would not take a Zip Dee off to install one. Zip Dee fabric is pretty spendy. But it will last 25 or so years under bad conditions. We have been in our Airstream in Fl since Jan first and have not opened the awning yet, so I think just not having one is a viable option.

Post a pic of the arms and mechanisms and let's see if we can figure out what you have. Webspinner made her own. there's another thread about attaching it to the mechanism.

Check with Makarios RV.com. You may be able to purchase a replacement fabric only and it would be drop shipped to you. A&E (Dometic) replacement fabric may work and would be much cheaper than purchasing a new complete awning.

The thing with my current awning is that the braces on the side are broken and missing parts that connect them to the trailer. The rolling part doesn't roll. If I take it to a repair shop can they fix something like that?

Custom awning for my Globtrotter cost a couple of hundred. Went cheap on the Tradewind for now with fabric from an e-Bay seller, $60 bucks.
First you need to determine the manufacturer. If the arms are curved at the top it's a Care-free or A+E. Straight tubing bent at the top is Zip-Dee. The roller bracket at the top of the arms may say Zip-Dee.
Lower brackets can be fabricated for Carefrees. Zips might still be available.

Ok. The arms are curves at the top. So it's carefree or a&e. this thing is old though. It needs a new torsion assembly. And fabric. I've got bids on both on eBay. The only problem are the lower brackets. The end of them is broken off. Can these be gotten somewhere. Sorry for all the questions. I'm a total newb at this and being a teacher I don't have any where else to ask questions.

If your in Blue Ridge your close enough to use the tarp and awning shop I use in Denton. They do a GREAT job on the replacement fabric and use any of the Sunbrella designs available. If your interested you can google 'em up...they are on University, North side of Denton. Any trouble..PM me.

Hi Redraider. I was just looking for some help for the very same problem you seem to have had. I have a 1969 safari with an awning frame that seems to be the same type you have mine is made of galv pipe, and the torsion assy anfd fabric are shot. Have you been able to solve your problem? if so could you give me some pointers on where to find parts? Thanks . Carl
