60 Safari

Question ??
Can the original axels shift/spin within their mounting?
the struts and frame seam to be in good condition with no rust but when i level the trailer there is approximately 2 inches difference on the left axel from the frame to the top of the axel
Appreciate any suggestions
Thanks LT

Hello from Colorado and welcome to these Airstream Forums. There are lots of folks here who enjoy the vintage Airstream hobby, including me.

I'm afraid I don't understand your question. A photo sure would help. I believe your Safari was fitted with the leaf spring and shackle axles of years past. About 1961 Airstream switched to the Henschen "Dura Torque" axles which eliminates the maintenance problems with leaf springs and shackles. Here is a photo of the dura torque axle, now Dexter made Torque Flex. It is a great performing axle. I installed these new axles on my 1966 Trade Wind renovation project.

So I think maybe you have leaf springs that have taken a set, or maybe some flex in the body mounts causing the unlevel condition. I can't imagine an axle "spinning" in its mounts.

Others with similar vintage trailers will likely chime in, as many folks here know I have no idea what I'm talking about.

If the springs are original, David is probably correct that they have weaken more on one side than the other. Photos of both sides would help.

Is the trailer still original or have you started to modernize it? If so, have you added anything heavy on one side? The original springs don't have the weight rating needed for all the items that are now standard.
