Dead Dometic

I believe the compressor went out on my Dometic A/C (fan still works, but switch to cooling and the unit shudders, then starts, and smells really hot. There was also a lot of water inside the vent ducting so I think the coils probably were frozen up too). I am trying to find out the cost to replace the compressor, and everyone is telling me that they are sealed units, and that I have to replace at least the whole upper section. Is this BS?
