Tanker aircraft down at Yosemite

Just saw this article in USA TODAY: National Park Service says air tanker went down fighting fire at Yosemite http://usat.ly/1xn6d8F

Hope no one from the forums is there or part of the crew working on the fire.

I didn't know they were having fires there. That really saddens me. I consider it one of the most beautiful places on earth. My family visited Yellowstone not too long after their last fire and it was sort of depressing.

Hope the pilot is okay.

Sure hope the pilot and any crew are ok. They were flying an ex-Navy S-2. Back in the day I spent a couple of years crewing in them until we transitioned to S-3s. Tough birds, takes a lot to knock one out of the sky.

Article says pilot died, and was the only person on board. Which confuses me, because I didn't know that there were any planes over 12,500 pounds gross weight certified for single-pilot operation, least of all converted warbirds. Of course, if he was flying solo when he shouldn't have been, that in itself may be a contributing factor…

It's a bit of a somber morning here, I work directly across the street from the tanker base here in Hollister, I can actually see the planes from my office window. This morning there is a big hole on the flight line where tanker 81 is usually sitting, a few people walking around and a few police cars at the gates to keep the media at bay...

RIP tanker 81 & crew...
