Lake Superior Provincial Park or Bruce Peninsula Park
Has anyone visited either of these two parks? I'm looking for someplace with great hiking trails, within 500 miles of Southwest Michigan.
Thanks!
Renee

We went from Kalamazoo to Lake Superior Provincial Park two summers ago and LOVED it...It was about a 7-8 hour drive. There are some wonderful hiking trails with our favorite being Orphan Lake trail that is about 4 miles of beauty! We basecamped at the Agawa Bay campground and hiked every trail in the park with the exception of the Coastal Trail because it is more for multi-day backpacking. If you have any questions our would like to talk more (since your right down the road from me) shoot me your email via PM and my wife and I could share some stories with you.

We also spent a week at Lake Superior PP last September. It is a great spot. On one of the hiking trails we saw our first bald headed eagle soaring above us.
The camp grounds are between the lake and highway. Superior is so interesting. One minute dead calm and a half hour later crashing waves. Great sunsets too.
Here are a couple pics from our trip there.

Whoo Hoo!
Thanks for the photos and the review Road Ruler!
I love Lake Superior and in the past have spent a fair amount of time around Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Like you, I'm entranced with how quickly the lake changes her mood.
What campground did you stay in at Lake Superior PP?

We like it best there in September when the summer crouds leave.
One of these days we want to get to the Edmund Fitzgerald Museum at White Fish Bay.

I think you'd find that they are both pretty spectacular parks - with different geology, geography and levels of visitor use. The Bruce is accessible to large numbers of people from Southern Ontario and the scenery along the Georgian Bay coastline has a bit of a Mediterranean quality about it - very unique. Lake Superior is just plain rugged Canadian Shield - even though it is on the Trans Canada highway you will not find the same numbers of people. If you choose the Bruce Peninsula then don't forget to take in the community of Tobermory and Fathom Five National Marine Park - and you might also want to consider taking the Chi-Cheemaun to or from Manitoulin Island - it's a pleasant alternative to returning home by the same route.

We are planning a trip to Ontario in June 2013. Want to camp at Bruce Pennisula NP. Do you know the size limitations for the Park?
Thank you1

We camped at Bruce Pennisula NP during the first week of July this year - between this park and the 5 fathoms NP, it was a great visit.
We had a pull through site - and no issues for the 20' SOB we were pulling at the time. It would have been more difficult to manouver with the 30' AS we now pull.
I didn't see anything obvious on the web as to length recommendations - a phone call might be required.

This is the area that Gordon Lightfoot wrote about in his famous song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".
Very striking scenery, weather that can turn on a dime. Your pictures capture it perfectly.
Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

And in the same song as mentioned above, Whitefish Bay gets special mention:
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.
The song tell a real story about real events in the not-too-distant past. On November 10, 1975, The Edmund Fiztgerald sank in Lake Superior, taking all 29 crew members to their grave.
If you're a SCUBA diver, you can visit the wreck, but no, not this time of year.

The wreck is at 530' depth.
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Whitefish Point has an exhibit on the Fitz.

They moved it?
Seriously, I caught the tale-end of video of the wreck on TV a few days ago. Maybe it was to do with the anniversary...

The show that I watched on the wreck a couple of years ago indicated that you are not allowed to dive to the wreck, in that it had been declared a memorial.
Now I don't know anything about diving...but 530' feet sounds very deep.

Gotta add the museum to my bucket list.
By all means go to Tobermory and take the glass bottom boat tour of the harbor (if they still have them).

They still have the tours. The tour around the harbour and out to the Flower Pots (rock formations) was excellent. There is hiking available on the island as well, good spots for swimming, and a picnic.

It looks like many people have done the dive to the Edmund Fitzgerald, both in submersibles and not. There are a lot of videos on the subject, and the show "Dive Detectives" for one, went there in SCUBA. Not your usual sport dive, of course.

We've not camped in the Bruce Peninsula, but have visited it a couple of times. It is full of beautiful Great Lakes scenery. In fact, in the northern parts, you could easily watch the sunrise over Georgian Bay, then catch the sunset over Lake Huron.
But, if you hike, you gotta check out the Bruce Trail! It goes the length of the Niagara escarpment, all the way from southern Ontario to the tip of the peninsula at Tobermory.

Parts of the Trans-Canada trail should be close to you, as well, although I think a lot of it is still on roads.
Explore and learn more about the Trans Canada Trail, one of Canada?s truly great endeavours

Whitefish bay is on the Michigan side of lake Superior not the Canadian side. And yes, 500 feet is well below the depth of recreational diving.

I just stumbled across this thread again and had to comment.
One of my best adventures was traveling up the Bruce peninsula on my BMW motorcycle in 1978 on my way to the BMW national rally in Brainard, Mn. I planned on catching the ferry first thing in the morning. Well I missed the ferry. It was a good thing. I had a nice breakfast, overlooking big tub and little tub harbor, and then took the glass bottom boat tour to view the sunken ships in the harbor and tour the flower pot islands.
When I was waiting for the ferry, I met an older couple traveling in an Avion truck camper. I still remember the birch interior. It was really cool.
Anyhow this past summer my wife and I went up to the UP and spent some time there in early July- not the best time to go, too many black flies and mosquitoes. We had camped 3 or 4 days in national forest campgrounds and the black flies and mosquitoes were a major problem. We went to Munising and camped at the city park, cuz they said no flies or mosquitoes. They were correct. We had a great time there; stayed for 5 days. Can't wait to get back up there next summer and go to Copper Harbor.
Here are some photos.
