Help on the Appalachia trail

My plans are to spend time following my brother in law to assist him in finishing the last half of the Appalachia trail from Harpers Ferry WV north to Maine. Any suggestions close to the trail as places to stay or things to do or even great places to eat would greatly be appreciated.

Assume youre pulling your AS and looking for campgrounds?

FYI, keep a watch on the weather, we have had snow near the Water Gap in Pa in late October in the past. Have seen over a foot near Mt Katahadin in mid to late October a few times, (thats 3 weeks from now).

Curious why he didnt start in Maine and head to Ga?

Charcoal Hearth Campground in Pine Grove Furnace state park is real nice, or Caledonia State Park too, both near the AT. We like Pine Grove Furnace better, plus there is a nice little store there, hikers stop by regularly.

This area is the halfway point on the trail.

Great Barrington Brewery

My favorite place in Berkshire County is in Great Barrington. The GB Brewery has great food too. Hope to see you there.

There is a book out there and I don’t know the name of it off hand but there is a bicycle route that tracks along the AT. If you can get ahold of that book it would be a good start. Just google a book that for bike routes that follow the AT.

Airstream Thru-hike

I thru-hiked the AT in 2014. My wife supported me in the Airstream. We would meet every three or four days. We both used the same AT Trail Guide (written by AWOL) for guidance. This Trail Guide was particularly useful for identifying trail towns and parking lot pickup points accessible when pulling the Airstream. With just these two pieces of information, you should be able to plan the rest using an App called AllStays which can help you identify campgrounds and boondocking sites in the target area. Be aware that since most of the AT is in mountainous areas, there are many campgrounds that are not open all year.

Glad you have the opportunity to be a ‘TraIl Angel’ for both your brother and hopefully, other thru-hikers. as well. It should be a rewarding experience the two of you will always remember.

Highly recommend you check the wetsites for Applachian Trail Commission and the Blue Ridge Parkway, both connected to the NPS. They have tons of info for the purpose of providing support to those hiking. There are several way-stations that you will want to get into to be ready when he comes off the trail.
Btw...HQ for the BR Parkway is near Asheville, NC and HQ for the ATC is in Harpers Ferry, WV. Two nice places to put on your travel stop list. Sounds like an interesting trip. Keep us posted.
