Window screens?

Hello,

I'm thinking about purchasing a Basecamp and I have a quick question: does the Basecamp have screens on the windows? This is kind of a big deal because we are planning a trip to Alaska and I hear mosquitos can be really bad.

Thank you,

Ken

Hi Ken: Only the road and curb side windows open and they have screens. The rear door has a separate screen that snaps on the inside door opening. A roll out screen door covers the curb side door. Screens cover the ceiling fan and bathroom fan. The only opening without a screen is the pass through door in the bathroom for the shower wand. Some owners have fabricated a screen to fit the opening. Side tents are screened in and attach to the Keder rail at the top and side walls with suction cups to the aluminum sides. Tents are comfortable and are fairly bug proof.

We enjoy our BC and I know you will too!

When are you planning on coming to Alaska? I live in Alaska and can answer any questions you have (at least about south central AK)

Mosquitos can be bad in many places and we did not find them usually to be all that bad in Alaska or northern Canada. We took three trips to Alaska and most days were mosquito free. The big ones are pretty harmless, but the little ones are maddening when they are around. There can be swarms of gazzilions and once they see fresh meat, they go after you. But that only happened a few times. They will get in the doors and any space between screens and frames. Fly swatters are necessary. Noseeums get through screens, but I don't remember them in Alaska, but sure do in Colorado and NM.

Gene - Thanks for the update on the mosquitos. It doesn't sound too bad which is good because they LOVE my wife...

AKBasecamper - We will be in AK next June and July - 60 days. No questions at this time but I bet I'll have some down the road.

Sounds like your wife is an excellent companion.

There are also lots of bears. Remember for bear watching, always stand behind someone who is out of shape and runs very slowly. You don't have to worry about bears getting through the screens because they don't care—one swipe and you didn't have to worry about screens anymore. Barely seriously, watch where you leave the door open. Bears, who have poor eyesight, just walk through screens and unlike other visitors, you don't have to serve them anything. They'll help themselves.

Bears can tear off car doors or the side of an Airstream (there was a photo of the latter posted on the Forum some years ago). They have an excellent sense of smell and can smell food miles away. We always brought bear spray (it is allowed at the Canadian border), but never had to use it. Bears are opportunists and don't want to work too hard so the bear who tore the skin off the side of an Airstream found the back of a cabinet and gave up.
