corrosion?
I just purchased a beautiful 2000 19' Bambi in near perfect shape. There appears however to be a spot around the Airstream plaque that looks like corrosion. Can anyone tell me what causes this, and is there anything I can do to retard future spreading?
Thanks, Cameron

That looks like filiform corrosion. Some have used the following technique to prevent spreading: gently scrape a little of the corrosion off, saturate the affected area with Corrosion-X, give it a day to penetrate, and then cover the scraped areas with transparent auto clear coat.

The badge on my Safari is exactly like that and has a similar corrosion around the perimeter. I have read in a few places that the adhesive on the badge reacts with the clearcoat which contributes to this filiform corrosion. I have not done anything to my trailer, so I'm interested to hear/see what others have done.
edit: if clearcoating after Corrosion-x treatment, I would use the clearcoat Airstream dealers sell in a rattle/spray can rather than automotive clearcoat.

Some forum members pre-emptively coat all panel edges and rivets with a light coat of Corrosion-X annually to (hopefully) prevent filiform from occurring in the first place.
I've read posts somewhere in the forums of attempts to sand existing filiform corrosion off. I think the results of this have been mixed.

My '02 Classic had a similar appearance to it when we bought it. The corrosion was not as wide an area around the plaque. I took masking tape and taped an area leaving maybe 1/2" perimeter around the plaque. I also taped the edge of the plaque and then ran a bead of vulkem around it. Smooth the vulkem and remove the tape and let it set up. It's not exactly beautiful but way better than corrosion. And the corrosion isn't spreading!

Curves, look up post 1917 , 1918 in the above thread on Corrosion. Also some pictures on post 1825 of sanding away Filiform, spray painting and then re-clear coating. It's work, but the best fix I've found to cover larger Filiform areas. Not a perfect match, but very close.
