my wife and i just picked up our new airstream land yacht 2 weeks ago today. it is a beautiful 33' with everything we wanted in a motorhome. we looked for over a year and a half for a motorhome that would meet our needs and wants, and went to the tampa rv show to try to find out if anything out there would be a better fit for us than the land yacht. everything that we saw kept reinforcing our opinion of the land yacht as the coach for us. we had lunch, and as we were leaving, a couple asked me what my hat said (yellowstone), and told us that they love their land yacht and that we should buy one if we wanted to travel. we had never met them or discussed anything with them, but my wife and i took this as a sign, and promptly went back to the airstream area, and after seeing the 33 that they had, we bought it. we have been out once so far, and cant wait for all the snowbirds to leave the keys and let the locals have a shot at them.. a big thanks to the couple from new port richey who convinced us to buy the airstream. hope to see them again on the road. we wanted to buy quality so that the coach would be in great shape when we plan to retire in 10 years, and from what i have read on many posts, airstreams do last. looking forward to reading more from other land yacht owners.

Welcome to the Forums. So glad that you got your Motorhome when you did. Heard at our WBCCI meeting on Saturday that Thor has decided to discontinue making motorhomes. They have even stopped construction on a new plant. Not sure of the reason..... anyone out there know???

Anyway, enjoy your silver retirement home.... we will in 2 years, 11 months and 17 days.... not that I'm counting or anything.

From what I have heard and read about Wade Thompson, my guess would be economics, they are making all of the trailers that they possibly can and can make more money by stopping the motorhomes and converting the production space to trailers. They may not be that competitive in the motorhome business.

They backed down to just production of commercial and specialty motorhomes. Cancelled the "new classic" project and discontinued the LY.

Part of the reason had to do with Workhorse no longer producing the smaller chassis that the LY was built on but I think a lot of it had to do with sluggish sales of AS MoHo's against other motorized brands. While I think the AS LY are very well built and hold up better than other brands, they are smaller, carry less and are limited in the number of slideouts you can support on the chassis. I don't know if the pushers ever really go a strong foothold in dealerships.

I think that the economic factor is the key. When you have large corporations like Fleetwood, Monaco and Country Coach etc. all putting out 4 slide diesels.....some starting in the low $100,000's, A/S just can't compete. They do make a fine product though. Too bad about the classic product. That would have been awesome coach! Sort of like the retro 75th 19 footer.
