Question sofa replacement for '92 Excella

I am dreaming of replacing or re-upholstering the front jack knife couch in our 92 Excella Classic, as the bed is just short of torturous... have you done this, and what model actually fit?
I have talked to Airstream, and they most politely sent me back to my local dealer, who said I should talk to Airstream- so AS was nice and said the coach is not the current 'wide' body but a 'narrow' body (unlike me) so a new couch is not an option from them, at least if I want it to fit.
I can't decide if a flexsteel couch in a jack knife model is an option, as I like the drawers underneath for extra storage, and the arm rests are different from what is there now. Is the jack knife style the only one that would fit?
I want it to look right- not too tall, and fit the space.
I also am wondering if the leather is worth the cost with kids and dogs.
Can re-upholstery be as good as a new one?
I appreciate any and all comments- Thank you!

You could re-upholster it by changing out the foam and material. You have lots of choices in newer foam available and, material?
Leather is an excellent option.
What's wrong with house training the kids and dogs now?
As far as the Jackson Center is concerned, I bet you monies, if you rode up in your 1992 Excella, they'd change it out for you~
Good luck~

Jackson Center in Ohio?? And leave the great green spring in the Northwest? Surely you jest...
I do wonder if a new flexsteel would sit over the batteries that are housed under the couch. I would lean toward reupholstery but am not sure I can find a shop that I can trust to do it well. Although it would not take much of anything to make the couch better for sleeping!

Here's what Steve and Amy did: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f38/...inc-40657.html. It's very nice. The photos don't really do it justice.

I would sure like to see some ideas for better sleeping accomodations up there. I have wandered if one used the original frame, attached plywood to the frame, purchased good quality high density foam, and had it upholstered........if that might make a better sleeping couch (sorry for poor sentence structure). Just a thought

Ours sleeps 2. One side is deeper than a twin. Very comfortable. Storage underneath is amazing.

Do It Yourself?

missyanford,

Did you make these modifications yourself? It looks very useful and gives lots of seating too. Please give details or post more pics when you have time.

Does the couch still fold out? If so, what did you do to eliminate the torturous spring/bar in the middle of the back? When our couch is opened flat you can sleep one person on the wide portion but sleeping two is nearly out of the question.

If anyone else has upgraded their couch and maintained the original operation I'd like to hear the details.

Thanks, Lucius

all custom--our carpenter built the l-shaped bench, extended the heat ducts, and boxed around important stuff in front for access. Then covered with plywood with a piano hinge so there is tons of storage. He covered the outside in the flooring material. Then a great upholstery place made good firm cushions. Actually, the corner piece is out now since our puppy chewed it, so we are having it repaired. It sleeps two with feet touching. We totally got rid of the beast that was there. What were they thinking with that torture chamber before? This works great since we moved the table to the other side near the door. 3 can eat at the table without any chairs added. Most of these shots are the left hand side--last few are the deeper side.
