I have had two blow outs with single axle trailers on the interstate and never felt it. The first I noticed because I saw smoke coming from the tire. The second I noticed because the camper was leaning. By the time I stopped, the wheel was already gone and I was riding on the rim.
As a child born in the first half of the last century when wheels had hubs, spokes and rims...It took me awhile to learn the correct terminology also....but the "rim" is old terminology. The "wheel" on modern vehicles is the hub/rim combination. A modern tire is mounted directly onto the "wheel". (But I also sometimes still slip and refer to the "rim".) LOL
I believe if you Google up the common definition of rim, you will find it is the outer edge of a round object...I was riding on the rim of the wheel...lol
