Modification instructions for Nest 16FB and Tesla Model X trailer mode detection
The Tesla Model X with the towing package is supposed to automatically switch to Trailer Mode when a trailer cable is plugged in. With the Airstream Nest the trailer is not detected because the LED lighting in the trailer does not look like a lamp load with the low detection voltage the car applies.
This can be solved by purchasing an “adapter” cable that goes between the car and the trailer cable, but to me that is unnecessarily clumsy and expensive. Here are instructions to solve it by an easy, inexpensive modification to the Nest trailer itself, which makes it compatible with the Model X and does not affect its compatibility with other towing vehicles.
The essential parts are a ring terminal, a 1000 ohm resistor, a butt splice, and a few inches of wire. These are to be installed inside a junction box which is already in the front part of the trailer.
