Generally speaking springs should not be welded,as the heat can take the temper out of the metal in the area of the weld.

Technically, yes, but practically, no. Most of what makes a spring a spring is the composition of the steel, the hardness it is hardened to, and the temper that it is drawn back to. The act of welding is going to wreck the hardening and temper in the area of the weld.

Does it hurt to try? Probably not--what the heck it might last another 20 years and work (almost) as intended.

No it can't be welded and it would crack again somewhere else. Get a new one from the awning manufacture.

You can weld it, but it will never work correctly afterward. The heat will take the "spring" out. Then it will not be very long till it breaks again when it flexes.

You can not weld a spring.
I am a good welder and wouldn't even bother trying to weld that.

Good metal prep, at least one full overlap wrap, lowest heat / amps for good penetration, file down the rough spots, and give it a try. It can be done. Let us know....
You cant weld suspension springs, leaf or coil, extension or compression. But a low tension torsion spring can.

I imagine that spring would be so apt to "blowing out" that it would look like a sparkler when the arc is struck,,, and even if a weld could be made it would be brittle beyond belief in the heat affected zone...

And besides, if the spring broke in one spot, even if by some miracle it is effectively welded, it will break somewhere else in short order.
