Bambi 16B Sport bed

We just bought our first Airstream from an online owner. The trailer is beautiful inside and out. But wait - can 2 people actually sleep together in that tiny bed?! It’s narrower than a double. How do you manage?

Hello! yes it is narrow for 2 people. I just sold my 16 Bambi last week and in process of buying 19' Flying Cloud but interesting thing is that same size bed as 16'! at first my wife and I weren't comfortable with this size but over time we got used to it. we put a small pillow to act as support between our bodies... it helped a lot. not a regular pillow but smaller like half of regular pillow. the issue with 16' footers is that you would have to climb over a body to go to bathroom during nights. One of several reasons why we bought the 19' is to have a corner bed, not having to climb over a person.

Bambi 16B Sport bed

I drop the dinette, my wife sleeps in the bed, I use a sleeping bag from LL Bean the model that’s to 32 degree, fold up in the AM and set up dinette for breakfast. I’am comfortable enough and dinette bed is at least same size as the bed. It’s one of the trade offs that and the wet bath, but it fits our lifestyle for camping. I think you need to go up to the 22’ Bambi for a large bed, I think that’s a queen size. Nest and Basecamp have other configurations.

Thanks for the thoughts on sleeping arrangements. We’ll try the sharing the bed approach to start off. I’m looking at the dining conversion as my 2nd option. Do you put any kind of topper on the cushions to make them more comfortable?

I don’t use anything other than the sleeping bag, but I can sleep about anywhere.

We owned a 16’ Bambi for 8 years. I am 6’3” tall and my wife is 5’ at best.
We did really well in the Bambi bed. It is actually longer than any other Airstream made!
As far as width is concerned, you have to like snuggling!
We actually loved sleeping in the Bambi...

The 22FB is 54” wide x 78” long - double width, but almost queen length.

I like to point out that if one person sleeps up against the wall the double bed feels like a queen. But this raises the need for some insulation from the cold aluminum wall!

The 16 and 19 beds are 48” wide - what old friends in the home furnishings business used to call three-quarter beds.

We have the 22' Bambi FB. The bed is a bit smaller than a queen. My husband, who is the primary driver during these trips sleeps on the bed, and I convert the dinette to a bed, and inflate an air mattress on top, and join the dog and sleep there. Everyone has a good night's sleep after a long haul.

My friend modified her Bambi bed to a 36" single to gain an extra foot of storage cabinets either side of the bedroom. She also took out the dinette and had a sofa installed with a pull out shelf that converts to a 48" bed with the back cushions. Works well for me but I have to make up and take down the bed daily.

As for the cold aluminum walls, we bought a roll of silver backed bubble wrap from Home depot and cut it to fit between the mattress and the aluminum wall.

The bed width in the 16' is cozy, but it is long, at 6'8" and the DW at 5'10" we have gone 3 weeks and when we get back home to the Cal-King, we seem so far apart! There are trade offs, but we wanted the 16' to get out in the West and we can always fit into a tent site with the 16'. Sleeping on ones side is good and you have to like each other too, an there will be the occasional elbow too, but hey, we are camping! As people have said, there are similar limitations (size and configuration) issues in other shorter AS too (there is also the dinette option).

Thanks for the idea. It’s been so warm this summer in southern Utah that sleeping against cold aluminum sounds delightful!

Bambi 16B Sport bed

If you’ve seen ‘A Christmas Story’ when Flick gets his tongue welded to the freezing flag pole. I have heard it’s nearly as bad touching the interior[emoji498][emoji846]

The bed in the Bambi 16 is great — slept like a bear in there.

You do have to climb over, if you sleep on the far side, but I don’t get up in the night, so I slept on the back side.

Couldn’t be beat.

Now have a 19-footer, but I still miss that aluminum cave in the back of the 16.

Yes but the Bambi has an 80” mattress plus the little vinyl covered lockers on each end making it more like 90” in reality. Longest bed my 75” body has ever slept in!
