Drove across SR 86, then down SR 85 to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument... 162 miles. Most of the drive was through open desert, much within the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. The roadside was heavily littered with beer bottles and cans... even those sections 'sponsored' by some group. I've never seen so many roadside memorial markers to fatal accidents. (on straight desert highway) Can't help but wonder if the two are related.
Got all set up and drove the 5 miles down to Lukeville on the border. Lots of RV's coming and going. Ate at a little cafe, shopped for a few groceries, mailed some letters. That's about all there is here, plus gas. Across the border is Sonoyta, Mexico. At night you can see the lights of town 8 miles away... stretching for miles along the border. Saw an evening ranger talk on Mountain Lions.
More stars than I've ever seen.
Next day we drove one of the roads... 5 miles out and back and hiked a 1.5 mile trail. Next day rain.... then several of mid-to-upper 60's... very nice with lots of sun. Can't believe how the rains have 'greened-up' this desert! The ocotillo is all green with new leaves and some are starting to blossom. The desert floor is green with moss.
Took a free van tour of the 21 mile Ajo Mountain loop road. Hiked a few more trails over the next few days....Alamo Canyon & Victoria Mine... about 10 miles in all. Saw lots of Cactus Wrens, Gila Woodpeckers, Phainopepla, Western Bluebirds, Collared Lizards. I had a good time here. Liked it a lot.
