Bevman is correct. The serial number is on the plaque near the door. For a late
1958 22' Flying cloud,a number formatted as 22-85xx is correct:
58FC
Thus your 22-8515 appears to be the correct serial number.
Later Airstreams also had/have the serial number stamped into the frame on the tongue, but I do not know if that practice was in place in
1958.
The "Big Red Numbers" (or ghost outlines of them) above the front and rear windows are membership numbers assigned by the Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI) that have no relation to the trailer serial number. The ghost outlines are often left after the numbers are removed if the trailer is not polished heavily because the numbers protect the area of aluminum skin under them from wear and oxidation. That difference is often obvious if the numbers were left on the trailer for any extended period of time before removal. It is the WBCCI membership numbers that I can use to identify possible prior owners. The club never kept records of the serial numbers of Airstream owned by club members.
