RVing is getting younger - Toronto Star

This weekend's "Wheels" section of the Toronto Star has a multi-page article about the attraction of trailers and RVs to a younger crowd - especially couples in their 40's with kids (i.e. us).

With cottages and cabins rapidly becoming unaffordable for many, especially in Ontario, and other means of travel becoming less and less fun, more and more young families are now becoming interested in owning a trailer or RV.

We're of course all for it. The more kids there are on a campground, the more fun they all have.

I thought that "couples with kids in their 40s" was the classic demographic.

Oh, wait... they mean "couples in their 40s with kids"...

Heh. That happens when typing while trying to stop aforementioned kids from killing each other. Thanks. Edited.

Aww, I should've waited until the end of the edit window to comment... I need to improve my deviousness.

I agree that it's great that people in our age group (if not demographic... no kids here) are getting into RVing, both because that will increase the diversity at campgrounds, and because it'll keep the industry and organizations going as the "old guard" ages. My WBCCI unit is relatively young, we have several members with young kids and most of us are still working. We've come to realize that's not the norm for the organization.

We nearly didn't join for that very reason - not that we dislike our elders, but we were concerned that our young kids would be a bit of a nuisance to an older crowd.

We needn't have worried though, our welcome could not have been warmer.

Like many here, we have kids in their 40's (actually, three in the 40's and one in his late 30's). We are glad to hear that younger folks are getting into RV travel. We avoid the campgrounds that cater to the senior crowd. We prefer to be in a campsite where there is some life going on around us.

We refer to the 55+ camping facilities as "the nursing home campgrounds".

It was always my theory that the over 55 gated communities were gated to keep some of these folks from getting out

My mother in law is 82 years old and volunteers 3 days a week in a nursing home (she was a nurse in her professional life). She frequently refers to the residents, many 15 years younger than she is, as these old people.

Yeah, great demographic - kids in their 40's, 50's and 60's! It all has to do with how you relate to others really. I have always been better with people older and younger for some reason. It was retirees that got me thinking about camping. Now they are gone but the inspired interest remains.

As far as not doing something because of others, I would be completely "hog tied" being single as the loner tends to be left out but I know that to enjoy life, I cannot live for others, just interact with and appreciate them.

Camping with a family is great, most kids love the outdoors and travel. I know I did and we had a tent. It was really fun when we took the boat and camped with my parents' friends and their kids. We did not hang around all day together as the families left in their boats on the lake but the evening dinner and morning breakfast times were the best.

And according to our dealer, when we bought, the average age now of Airstreamers is 47 -- right where we are! Only we don't have the kids (unless the dog counts).
