On the flight line...
Saw this on the inter pipes...
Wheels up at 1500
Bonus points if you can name the aircraft
Extra bonus if you can figure out the place.

Congrats, Bob, you know your super saber.
Any takers on the two birds in the background?
Anyone recognize the place?

Reminds me of the field near Riverside, CA. There's an air museum nearby, the name escapes me.

Bob aces the recognition (well, he technically would have if there were two more planes to ID) in a very impressive performance, given how little of the planes in the BG were visible!
SteveSueMac, I don't know if the sup would tow the Airstream, but the Phantom probably would. Of the F-4, it was said to be the plane that proved with enough thrust, a brick could fly.
Overlander, you are quite warm and in the right state...

On the flight line...
The F-4 is proof that with a big enough set of engines, and a few tail feathers you can fly a barn door.
The most fascinating thing I learned about the F-4 is, according to a former Air Force pilot, under certain circumstances it will ‘depart flight’ and be totally unrecoverable. At that point, you have to hope you are within the safe ejection seat deployment envelope. Nothing but brute force and violence about that aircraft.
Seen some amazing takeoffs and arrested landings with that bird.

Why is that surprising? The AS is "Cloudsplitter" after all.
Actually, MCAS El-Toro, Da Nang, Viet Nam.

A very well known triple+ ace from WWII told me the Hun was the worst flying airplane he ever got in. The best was the F-86, even better than the P-51.

Great guess, Steve. It is indeed Edwards AFB.
Love planes in general, but I think my favs are the x-planes. It was all about pushing the envelope and expanding our abilities. Hmmmm, theoretically, this should work...let's build it and see how it flies...
Plus, they just look so darn cool.

There was a black and white short movie years ago called the right brothers vs the wrong brothers. Really amazing what people thought would fly back in the day....

Measure and Math
Yeah, lots of folks working on powered flight a century ago...
What many don't know is that the reason Wilber and Orville succeeded first is that they realized the numbers in Otto's tables that everyone was using seemed off. So before they invented the airplane, they invented the wind tunnel.
They built wing models and measured the lift. Systematic engineering is what revealed the secret of flight. I try to remember that whenever I get lazy and try to eyeball something rather than take the time to measure or do the math.

The picture was taken by a former test pilot and airstream owner, Roger Mosley, on the south ramp at Edwards AFB. You can see a few more pictures taken at the time in a great little article on the connection between pilots and Airstreams here:
http://outsideinterests.info/article/say-rivets/
And just for fun, here is another pic from the same site. Hey Bob, can you ID this bird?

What nostalgia. I most definitely thought I was looking at an A7 along with the F4 and F100. I give Bob lots of credit. They look a lot alike. I was fortunate to arrest these aircraft in emergency landings in the USAF and Air National Guard. If memory serves me the F100 landed about 190 knots and F4 120. All depended on weight and other things.
Thanks for the pics and link.

Yes, the A7 and F8 are very similar looking. Here is a closer look at the model on display from the same article:
The A7 has a slightly more rounded nose and tail and the canopy is split, where the F8 has a single pane canopy.
There are few examples of pairs of aircraft in the US military that bear such striking resemblance. The YF-12A/A-12 is often mistaken for the more common and well-known SR-71, but those are built by the same company and are based essentially on the same airframe, but those are probably easier to tell apart at first glance than the Crusader and Corsair II. The F-102 and -106 also look a lot alike at first blush. The military versions of the DC-2 (C-42) and DC-3 (C-47) come to mind as perhaps the most difficult to tell apart. I am discounting here upgraded versions of essentially the same airframe, e.g. all -A -B -C models.

Speaking of the SR-71.................Coolest airplane ever built. And built on early 1960's technology. Enjoy boys.
