Guitar playing & armless folding chairs
Howdy...question for all of you who play guitar/banjo/fiddle/etc....
Anyone found a good folding armless camping chair? I play guitar and fiddle and need an armless chair! Just bought an Interstate...not much room at all, so must fold up into a neat little case.
Thanks!

I wouldn't know a 'Cafe Chair' from a tree stump if it wasn't sitting on the front stoop and Sandy told me it was French.

Hmm, all great suggestions and links. I should clarify, I want one that folds up into a bag. But all the ones I've seen, have the bar across the front, and that digs into your hamstrings when you sit in them. Maybe my ideal chair doesn't exist. I'll keep looking!

I don't have a suggestion for a chair but I suggest you think about where you play your guitar while camping. Many people limit this to areas where theyre not near others - in consideration for the many campers who camp for peacefullness and quiet and to hear the sounds of nature and not someone else's choice in music.

Guitar player here.... The only decent chars I've found aren't very portable. My advice is get a great strap. I like these (prepare for sticker shock)

Also, if you have a large enough chair you can sit a diagonally in it so that your fretting arm is free outside of the armrest and your picking arm is free enough inside the armrest on the other side.
For me a strap is required on a 7 lb banjo whether I'm sitting or standing.

I have had great success sitting in my young childrens folding chairs. End up about a foot off the ground (lower centre of gravity keeps the late night lean to the left to a minimum). The arms are low enough to not interfere with playing, and you are that much closer to your cocktail, so less spillage. I imagine this may not be a viable option in about 20 more years, as they don't allow for much more of my girth, and the deep lunge to get in and out might get tough (and embarrassing). I always throw a good sized (tall and wide) chopping block in the truck that with a cushion doubles as a solid stand alone guitar stool.
I love entertaining myself in the woods (really anywhere I have 10 min of uninterrupted time), and sincerely apologize to those who have to hear me putter. Take solace in the fact that you can enjoy all the early morning nature sounds, as I love to sleep as late as the kids will let me.
I am working on a collapsible compact guitar stand that spikes onto the ground to prevent accidents to my beloved acoustic.
keep on plucking
