My dream is to spend as little on tow vehicles as possible and still get the job done reliably and inexpensively while being a nice, maneuverable daily driver. That takes diesels out of the picture and makes basic half-ton trucks look pretty good, but there are SUV's such as Dodge Durango that look good for mid-size Airstreams.
There are new vehicles coming soon that look even better with more engine, transmission, and body/frame material choices than we have seen. It's getting interesting.

Dodge/Cummins 3500 Mega Cab with changes to get 20 mpg....LOL. Actually, any of the big trucks with tricked out rear bed goodies would nice. Like a door to the bed, lots of storage in a high quality cap.

Interesting question! Very subjective. I have a 2007 Chevy with a Duramax and I love it. But I do a lot more than tow the Airstream with it. It could be a dream TV, but...
I would like about a '56 Buick Roadmaster with the 6.2 nailhead engine to tow my '55 FC. Perfect style with ample power and comfort. Love that Buick swoosh and lines, they go with the trailer perfectly!

It sure is getting interesting!
My guess is that in the 3 to 5 years the technology available will be pretty amazing! I have at least that much left in my current ride so I will simply watch from the sidelines for now but it is fun to watch no question!
In keeping with the theme of the thread, I am thinking that my "dream tow vehicle" is coming and it is not far away....

I think there are some very interesting cabs which can be outfitted for the ultimate tow vehicle....from the big folks like Kenworth, et. al. While this is overkill in pulling an Airstream, it would be a lot of fun...LOL

I have always loved seeing those huge things! I don't want one but they are cool to see if a bit ridiculous.

My favorite "Real" truck! I would love to be able to rationalize one but can you see me pulling up to a rally pulling our 16' Bambi driving one of these? We already get comments about how our F-150 is bigger than our Airstream...
My funny, funny wife likes to point them out to me when we are driving by saying "...hey Bruce, he has a Real truck"
Sigh,
Bruce

One of the nice aspects of driving a huge moho was the driver seat height...I was actually about 6 inches taller than most of the semi's on the road. My 2008 Dodge/Cummins 2500 Crew Cab/Long Bed 4X4 has my seat as the center of a lot of goodies, all designed for driver comfort, information acquisition, and to obtain the highest driver alertness. I have sat in the cab of one of the big trucks at a Kenworth dealer....nice, and with the hi-tech seats, probably more comfortable than my Dodge.

I have mine, a 1995 F250 PowerStroke....
It does a great job of towing our 1987 Avion 34W. I can do most of the work needed to maintain the diesel engine, so those costs are kept to a minimum. I love the smell of diesel, and I love to hear the truck doing what it was designed to do. I like the fuel economy of this truck, compared to a comparable gas-engined truck. I expect this truck/engine to last a long time. Only has 106K miles on it now.

My dream tow vehicle is what ever is doing a good job towing for us at present. At present we have a 2005 F250 V10 super cab long bed 2wd limited slip 4:10 rear end. Got it last year with only 38,000 miles on it. Previous owner keep it garaged and mostly used it to tow. He was happy to sell it for $13,000 and we were happy to buy it. It was about $30,000 to $35,000 less than buying new, that adds up to about 10,000 gallons of gas, that equals about 100,000 miles of towing. After this we will have to start looking for our next dream TV, which may be a television in an old folks home.

I think a lot of Airstreamers have an eye on the new aluminum F150, as well Ram Ecodiesel. They match up well with most mid-size Airstreams if not all Airstreamers.

Wow! That was a great deal on a very nice truck! That V10 engine does a great job, and current gas prices make it even more economical to drive. That's a real workhorse.

Yeah, this Airstreamer's wallet just doesn't match too well. I built one like I liked for $57,330 it's mine! I know, there are discounts but...
So, it made it to this "dream" list.

Porsche Cayenne Diesel, 2014. Gets in everyday driving 26 city and up to 36.5 on interstate. Looking for a Bambi to mate up to it - will purchase Bambi over the winter - already have the Porsche.

Yep, we bought a new Ram Hemi in 2012 for much less than half that price and it does a fine job for us while never needing a single repair (yet).
