safe routing in the West

Now that we have arrived in the desert Southwest and are almost ready to head north as the weather warms up, we are wondering if there is a good site, app, etc. that would direct us in our travels as we go forward. How do you find out in advance which mountain and coastal roads should be avoided. I am aware of the Good Sam GPS, but I have seen many reviews that complain the device is all but useless. Thank you in advance.

Google maps recently added traffic information. Waze also has that. If you are looking for trailer/rv specific ones, I don't know of any but somebody probably will

If you use an ipad/iphone the map function will show traffic. Most state DOT (dept of transportation) now have apps. Or at least a website. Most have interactive road condition maps that show road conditions and many times webcams so you can actually see what is going on. Invaluable for New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and other states.

We drove to Montana from Northern California and used an app named "Inroute".It will plan your route give you a couple of options, with the time they will take. If there are tolls on this route. Gives you the weather, temp, humidity, precipitation, wind speed. Notes the curviness of the road. It was very helpful. Also "Gas Buddy" is invaluable on the road.

Using Google maps if you choose the "bicycle" option it will give you elevation change on your route, but going straight west out of Jackson, WY I saw the elevation change, but did was not prepared for the rate of assent-7 to 8% for miles. Made it fine, but will never do it again. If it is a state road I call the Highway department and ask.
