My first air conditioned truck was a 1976 Mack cab-over thatI had a rooftop AC installed. I was instructed to never set the thermstat on the coldest setting due to "freeze-up". Sal.

The plus side of the heat in Austin is that there are hardly any mosquitoes because they burst into flames when they fly into direct sunlight.

We were in Tucumcari, NM last weekend and it was 104º. The AC was set at a "slightly cool" setting and kept us comfortable while cycling every 15 minutes or so. I was worried after reading some of the horror stories but the Carrier did a great job and I won't hesitate to do more hot camping.

Yeah, you can tell it's hot in CenTex. By the time the summer will be over with, about half of the Texas Highlands Unit will have been here.

TS Don?
This sums it up:
Quote:
Tropical Storm Don, the fourth named storm of the 2011 season, made landfall near Baffin Bay, Texas yesterday evening around 10pm CDT in less-than-grand fashion. The storm was looking very weak for the 24 hours before landfall, but fizzled rapidly after landfall, and by early Saturday morning, there was barely a trace of the storm to show that it even existed in the first place.
NHC Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake probably said it best in this mornings 5am EDT discussion on the storm:
THE DON IS DEAD. THE CYCLONE LITERALLY EVAPORATED OVER TEXAS ABOUT
AS FAST AS I HAVE EVER SEEN WITHOUT MOUNTAINS INVOLVED. DON HAS NO
CONVECTION...MEAGER RAINFALL...AND ONLY A SLIGHT SIGNATURE IN
SURFACE OBSERVATIONS AND RADAR DATA. THEREFORE...THIS IS THE LAST
ADVISORY ON THIS SYSTEM.

I think that defines how hot it is in Texas!

Good news in Texas
Good news....The Hot Weather for the week is past.
Bad news.... Weather forecast is for hotter weather this week...no end in sight. 110 for today. Maybe I will find something to polish on.

Head down to round rock and hit the SOTR with some polish if you like Robin! If that isn't enough I sure could use your help on welding, installing a new floor, installing new roof vents, panel replacement, etc, etc, etc.

I tell people this is the beginning of a shanty town, but like I mentioned before- Big Brither city officials made us move. Then the AC motor went out (perect timing) and there we were right in the sun. well- I found this aluminum coated (both sides) bubble wrap insulation thats highly reflective and began plating the AS with it. Makes a pretty darn good barrier against the sun. Here's a picture and I am not ashamed ha because this will be the last residence we have here in this town.

It's going to break us, before it gives us a break. This week promises to be the worst yet this year, 106-108 in the DFW area. Happily we're going to AR on Thursday morning, should be good for a 6-8 degree improvement and hopefully cooler nights. Unhappily we'll have to load up on Wednesday in the 100s.

It's going to be pretty hot here as well! I'm going to pack at night (a little cooler) and hook up the generator to run the ac on Thursday when I pack the food. AR is going to be hot but at least we won't be working!

This year is definitely an outlier. It's always hot, but this summer in Texas is ridiculous. It at least keeps Californians from snapping up all our affordable real estate. That's the only positive spin I can think of.

It's not outlier. Fire, drought and elevated temps are the new norm for all of Texas, much of the South and most of the Plains. A wet & mild summer will the exception from hereon for any reasonable planning purposes.
Keep in mind that while we all hate the daytime high temps, it is the elevated night time temps that kill off the old, sick and very young: no relief means exhaustion. Heat waves kill more Americans than all other natural disasters combined.
Glad I'm in Corpus Christi. As soon as the sun sets we fall back into the very comfortable 80's, unlike Dallas . . 98F at midnight is no joke.

Our high heat has subsided somewhat...the humidity is crazy and unrelenting though! Absolutely no night relief at all!

Toasty Trailer
So, it's not really as bad as I feared, it's only 6 degrees above ambient in my Argosy at the moment. Unfortunately, that adds up to 115F! It's parked in full sun on the street in front of our house (we're going on a trip in the morning.) The forward, aft and curbside windows are open, sunward curtains/blinds closed.
The refrigerator is on the curbside, and the curbside is facing south... it was about 42F in the refrigerator this morning around 0800 (I lit it about 1900 yesterday) but with the sun beating that side of the trailer and the interior temp so high, it's about 75F in there now. I guess one of the fan mods for pulling hot air out the refer vent is in my future. Looks like the ice chests will have to save us tomorrow! I'm sure the awning would have made some difference, but it would overhang the sidewalk and that didn't seem like a good idea. Until we have time to stay away from Texas in the summer, I think it's going to be mostly fall/spring/"winter" camping for us and take the summer off.

Now you know why those who couldn't afford to go to Colorado from Texas (the YMCA camp at Estes where neighbor met neighbor) via train in days of yore came to North Beach in Corpus Christi when the barrier islands were still private ranches (pre-1960). TX-358 changed all that. No more "Coney Island" amusements.
From my old address on West Hildebrand in SA to the National Seashore is right at three hours. I trust you can find something more interesting when at that beach than my last trip there from out of town: got sucked into Jackson Bate's new biography of Samuel Johnson. Only ventured out at night . . . all night. Nothing like to youth to have it all.
A strong breeze and cold beer. Lot's of both.

I moved here from north Texas a few months back . The last cold winter and hot summer in Texas did it for me. It's much nicer here...

It's too hot today. The breeze is from the south so we're getting Austin's heat island air - it's 102 in the shade but it'll carry on heating up for another couple of hours.
We had a brown-out earlier. My sawzall was running slowly, so I went in, and DW said we were having a brownout. Lovely. Hope rolling blackouts don't follow.
