Germany...brings back so many memories.
Airforce brat lived in Zweibrucken, 3 Wing, Canadian Airforce Base (my alologies, no "umlaut" key).
Father transferred back to Canada in 1967, so please excuse my spelling... Contwig, Parkbrau, hot bread pretzles, my friends Affie, Wolfgang, Gaby. Tilsit Strasse and Rosen Garten.
Retired now, thank you for post. Have decided to re-learn German.
Side bar: apparently my fathers ancestors arrived in Canada from the Alscase/Lorraine region of Europe. That land has been ceded between Gemany and France forever. Family history says he was a former bodyguard for Napolean Bonaparte and fought in the war of 1812 in Canada. Who knows for sure, fact or fiction?

What a crowd ... remcolent isn't too far off...but sounds a little like foreign language speaker's stab at an instruction manual translation... it actually means:
"Good day, Sir. How goes it today" (or less literally: "How are you today?")

Coitus perhaps? Oh, you said NON-spousal!
(...though what you do "down-under" is your business.)
How about:
friend: comes / comitis/ amicus
or
companion:socius / compar
All in all, COMPAR is probably closest to "mate" in th Oz useage.
Combibo, compar!
Drink up, mate!

I want to thank all the little people that helped me to get to this wonderful point, my mom, my dad, and of course, my manager...
