This was a great idea! Have you considered using an HO flatcar, to get closer to scale appearance? I can see how S scale fits the two AS models. Perhaps the HO flat would be too small. My scale is G, so any of the above is just conjecture.

The particular Hallmark AS ornaments I used for loads in this instance are very close to S scale- much too large for HO. I am not a stringent "Scale" railroader, but I like things to be close.
It would be cool to do it with HO flatcars and HO Airstreams. You could probably get some close to G gauge as well.
My main layout is 4 gauges- S, HO, N, and Z. I run O and Standard gauge around the Christmas tree, G gauge in the garden, and also have a 7.25" gauge handcar for my daughters to put in the yard. I like 'em all!

I ran HO as a "miniature train ride" WITH the G for a while. I used some HO gons for seating cars and rigged an HO tender for the G scale engineer. It always got a LOT of attention at MRR shows. I haven't actually had a layout in years, just shelves now, full of G rolling stock and a few autos, trucks, and buildings. At one point I thought seriously about using some Z scale as a "garden RR" behind a house on a G scale layout! OK, that's enough MRR talk out of me.

I took the Copper Canyon train trip some years ago. The tow vehicles stayed connected when on the flatcars. There is no way to get the second Airstream on the flatcar. All towed rigs were one to a flatcar. They put 2 small motorhomes such as B-vans on several 60-foot flatcars.
The way we loaded was to drive over timbers with tapered ends that bridged the gap between the initial embankment that the train was backed against and the first flatcar. The caravan leader coached us with the CB radio when to add power and when to back off. We placed our road-side wheels right at the edges of the flatcar decks. The workers then shouldered the timbers and carried them to made a bridge to the next flatcar. And so on until all were all loaded. We were then chained down and a crude railing built on the curb side stake pockets. At the destination, the engine pushed the train against a similar embankment. The folks who had to cross the most bridges during loading had it easiest when we unloaded and had to cross the fewest bridges.
It was a wonderful trip and it is a shame that it is no longer available. I have photos on my desktop and I will post several when I am next on that computer.

I had to take a bit of dramatic license. There were no tow vehicles for those Hallmark ornaments. I suppose I could have come up with something...and the trailers need to get on that flatcar somehow! Perhaps we will say those small Airstreams are being delivered across country from Jackson Centre?
I will look forward to seeing your prototype pictures. What an adventure that must have been!
