A combination of WD40, Prolong, "which is like WD40 but a little thicker" and 0000 steel wool made my rock guards look like new again. It took about an hour and a half of scrubbing.
Thanks for the tip on the WD40

On my last trip road tar got on my rock guard. I tried to remove it with WD-40 but it was hard and thick and it could not be removed with the WD-40.
So I decided to try tar remover and, with much effort, I finally got the tar removed. But I ended with shiny spots (I guess I rubbed too hard). Any ideas on how to mitigate these shiny spots?
Thanks!

I use Weiman Stainless Steel Cleaner/Polish. Works well, even on tar.

We always use mineral spirits to remove tar spots. No rubbing needed

I also recently travelled through the Northern California Siskiyou's and got spray on the front of the unit from the snow melt that California uses. It left droplet stains on the rock guards, window shields and the upper part of the unit. Within a few days I tried to clean them off. Very difficult. Walbernize didn't work. Airplane Wax Wash didn't work. McGuires worked somewhat with a lot of effort.
Any ideas what liquid product California is using for snow and how do I remove it.

Walbernize is the worse thing to use on the rock guards. Leaves a residue. I have used Aero Cosmetic Wash/Wax as well as WD 40. I would use WD 40 if you have tar or a film on them. That works decently. I then use the Aero Cosmetic Wash/Wax to give them a longer lasting shine. I don't think I would use WD 40 on the window shields. For that a bug and tar remover might work, but I would spray Aero Cosmetic Wash/Wax and let it sit awhile first. I also spray Aero Cosmetic and let it set awhile for the upper part of the unit. But you have to let it soak a bit. Not sure I would use WD 40 on the aluminum.

A spray bottle of kitchen stainless steel cleaner worked great on our rock guards. They look brand new again!
