Towing with F-150
Hi Walt,
Have you had your current setup on a scale, so you know what your actual weights are (Drive Axle, Steer Axle, Trailer weight, Tongue weight)? With all those numbers, you will know what your actual load is on the truck axles, and how much payload you have remaining on the truck and trailer. Using those numbers, and the dry weights of the truck and trailer, you can estimate what the load will be with the new rig.
I tow a 27' FB FC with a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT (basically an F-150), 5.4 V-8, 3.73 rear axle, and tow package. My setup is about 1,400 lbs under my GCWR and 2,700 lbs under the max tow weight of the truck but at the max payload capacity of the truck. This means I can't carry any more cargo in the truck because it's fully loaded, so we have to pack carefully.
I have no issues towing, especially here in Florida. In the mountains, though, I exercise great caution. I've climbed the steepest hills, a 17% grade in Canada, with no trouble at all. Going downhill, though, I start out very slow, sometimes in 1st gear, to have a safe descent. This is where the diesel owners will start to jump in about the advantages of their rigs, and I agree, but you can be safe with a gasser.
