Tow Vehicle selection

Purchased a AS 25 and new to trailing, so now onto tow vehicle selection. In initial stage and finding the process confusion at is best. Looking at a Chevy Silverado 1500, EcoTex3 5.3L V8, and a Chevy Tahoe with same engine, told both will pull the 25AS. Leaning towards Tahoe (more comfort ride for wife??), but told 1500 Silverado better tow vehicle...My 1st post, so any feedback on experiences with either TV greatly appreciated..Thanks

Hi

As long as you can get the same packages on both vehicles, they will likely be an equally good TV. If anything the SUV might be a better choice. Any time you pick a TV, look at how much "stuff" (and passengers) you will have along and see how the weights all work out.

The 25' FC comes in at 7,300 lb fully loaded. It has a tongue weight of 837 lb.

The Tahoe goes from 6,600 lb standard to 8,600 lb towing with the max tow package. You would want max tow for the 25'.

The 1500 will get up to 11,000 lb towing with the max tow package and the 5.3. Yes, that's more, but you don't need more.

Again, tow capacity isn't the full story. Loading the SUV up with a bunch of toys and people *and* the trailer ... not so much ...

I'd get the longer wheelbase.

We have a '16 Suburban HD Tow LTZ 4wd, and while looking around at parts I discovered that things like the front brakes are the same as the Silverado. Different frame, but most of the same underpinnings. We lost some payload capacity with our choice, but we have three kids. The rear seat in a crew cab wasn't enough for us, and the kids started to complain about the back seat in a Ford crew cab we had prior as they grew bigger. We (they) definitely appreciate the reclining second row buckets and tossing a third kid in the back row. If you're not traveling with kids it won't be as big of a deal, but it was a biggie for us. We get really close on our payload capacity, so most everything else goes in the trailer. Or it doesn't go, which is frequently a better choice. :-) A lot of it depends on how you want to use the vehicle on all the other days where you are not towing something.

What was your usable payload capacity on that Suburban if I might ask?

Another thing to consider...
Will you ever be carrying stinky stuff like generators and cans of gasoline? If so, the truck is the clear choice.

Mine is 25' also & towes beautifully. Like mentioned above, the longer wheel base truck will serve you well, no matter the body style, pick up or Tahoe XL. Welcome aboard!

I love the F150 3.5L Ecoboost with 10 Speed Transmission and tow package. XLT is very comfortable.

More stable for towing. I owned both a Tahoe and a Suburban, no comparison. The Tahoe has plenty of power, though.

Our 2016 'Burban weighs in at 5975# full of gas, no hitch in receiver, daily junk on board, no passengers. GVWR is 7500#, leaving 1525# for passengers and tongue weight. For us, passengers and tongue weight get us 100-150# shy of max, so almost all cargo goes in the trailer. We have a CAT scale two miles from the house, so it's been weighed a few times.

We're a heavy, fully-optioned, 4wd '16 Suburban LTZ with the 5.3 V8 (only engine option). Tahoes (especially 2wd and LS/LT trim) will weigh hundreds less, which should convert to payload. Check your labels. YMMV
