Tires for TV - ouch.

When did tires get to over $250 each? I thought petroleum was inexpensive now....

Anyone have a recommendation on a new set of shoes?

My 2015 Silverado 2500HD takes a LT265/70R18E.
I am the second owner, and it came with Michelin LTX A/T's, which seem to perform pretty well.
I do not do much off-roading, despite having the 4WD.

Thanks.

Tires for TV - ouch.

Bite the bullet, the wallet will take a hit, but yeah, last set of new boots for the TV were Michelin and it was a bit north of $600 for the four of them. Rides much better than the OEM tires and higher load rating to boot. Caught them on sale at $70 off for a set at Sam’s Club a few months ago before the serious rain and snow started out here in Southern California.

Weather out here has been “interesting in the Spockian Sense” lately, to put it mildly. I got over 2.65” of rain in the backyard in one day a few weeks ago. Yikes!

Michelin; I get 70K miles typically from their LT line....Costco usually has a $70 off plus additional free mounting or if you use their credit card, another $30 or so. Sams also. Sometimes Tire Wherhouse will match their price or try to beat it, so check around. Great tires though, and the ride is quiet.

Yup. Love the quiet ride I get with them. My go-to brand after the OEM stuff wears out.

The cheapest approach is to mail order your tires and have a local shop do the mounting. Either TireRack.com or SimpleTire.com will have the best internet pricing.

The 20 inch Michelin’s are close to $300 per tire, plus shipping and installation.
Ouch!

Just put 4 LT265/70R17 Michelins on my 2500HD after only 31K miles from the unfortunate OEM Firestones.

I expect to see 100k on the odometer before these get taken off. $1227 with road hazard warranty locally and worth every cent. Michelin makes an excellent load range E tire.

This is third set I have bought over 2 trucks.

I am former high speed on track driving instructor and you can skimp on lots of things, but tires should not be one.

About the time I started paying $50 or way more for my bicycle tires.

I'm blown away by the cost too. Tires are considerably more expensive now than when I bought my last set.

The Michelin LTX A/T2 tires are excellent tires, they get very high marks at the Tirerack site. The only thing is that they don't have as good a load carrying capacity as the Michelin Defender LTX, which also gets excellent ratings, and they are a 60K tire whereas the Defender is a 70K tire. The A/T2 gets better traction off road, but I'm getting the Defender tires for my 4Runner because of the better weight capacity and slightly lower cost.

Smile See if they have a discount

How many miles do you have on the current set of tires you are replacing? The last three sets of tires I purchased (two sets of Bridgestones for my Tundra, one set of Michelins for the Airstream) all needed replacing before their warranted mileage. Bridgestone/Firestone gave me 40% off when I replaced the OEM set that came on the Tundra then about 20% off when I replaced those. I use Dueler H/L Alenza Plus on the truck. I'd prefer Michelins but they have not offered a tire I want for my 20" wheels at the time I needed tires. You'll have more choices with your 18's.

The trailer was even better. At four years and about 30,000 miles, my OEM Michelin LTX M/S2 tires showed cracks in the sidewall. I called Michelin customer support to ask about that and to ask what tire they recommend and warranty for use on travel trailers. They referred me to a local dealer. That dealer inspected the tires, called Michelin and offered to replace my four year old LTXs with four new XPS Ribs mounted and balanced for half list price. My answer: "Yes, siree!".

My experience says, unless you want to change brands, tell a dealer that you think your current tires have failed prematurely. They seem to have a hidden basketful of special offers and discounts for repeat customers.

Of course, if you got 75,000 miles on tires that had a 60,000 mile warranty the price might still be $275/tire.

The michelin's are a great tire - however, we do a lot of boondocking so opted for bullit proof tires with load rating "E"

Tire Price

I have a Costco membership and bought my last tires there. Michelins. But what was great was that they have free installation and balancing. NTB wanted to charge almost $250 to mount the same tires.

I also went with the E rated Michelins. Paid just a little more than $900 from local tire store. We were on a 12,000 trip over the summer, not having to worry about the tires was a good thing. We had issues on the way but not with the tires. They were great.

If buying online be aware that Michelin will NOT honor any warranty claim. I found this out when I bought a set and could not get one tire to balance called Michelin and they said only will warranty when bought in a factory authorized store.

I think tariffs did it. It was a big change 6 months ago.

The increasing cost of raw materials (oil, steel, rubber, etc.) plus the hefty increase in the different types and sizes of tires used by auto manufacturers have caused the increase in tire prices.

Tires imported from China have a 10% additional tariff. Michelin Defenders are made in Thailand, Michelin LTX A/T2 tires are made in the US, so there is no tariff on either.

tirerack.com will tell you where your tires are made.

Maybe a data point for you:
I ran into the same kind of thing a couple years ago when I was looking for a set of tires for my wife's SUV. It uses a slightly odd size, and the local outfit where I have been doing business for 25 years wanted $1650 for a set. WOWSERS!! And these weren't even the 'best brand' that they sell. I said, 'I need to think about this, guys', and walked out to do some online research.

Without going through all the details, I'll just hit the highlights. Several years ago, I started to find better (way better) deals than Costco; but I checked there anyway, because just everybody says, 'Costco is the best place to buy tires'. The set of Michelins I wanted would have had to be ordered without seeing exactly what I was getting, and were $1250; okay that's $200 better, but I kept searching.

America's Tire was $975 for the same set of tires. Free mount/balance, same as Costco. I had to preorder them, but that was OK because I could see online exactly what I was getting. They had them in when they said they would, I made an appointment and they took me in on time, so I was in and out without fuss. Oh, and that came with a $75 prepaid Visa card, so we beat Costco by $350.

Hope that helps.
(And yes, back when I had a 3500 dually, a set of tires - not the expensive ones - were over $1600, so I feel your pain...)

True, no tariffs on these brands, but being a world wide commodity, like oil, when some go up, all go up. That holds true in agriculture, regardless if the product is being from a tarriffed country or not. Something I am dealing with now.
