Another tow capicity question

Our TV is a 2010 Ram 1500 with 4.7 V8 and a 3.55(I think) transmission. We currently have a 2010 22FB Sport and are thinking of trading it in for a 25 FB Twin Flying Cloud. The towing capicity for the Ram is 7100 lbs, our 22 Sport weight is listed as 3400 lbs empty and 4300 max, our TV has no problems pulling it unless we are in the mountains, then it struggles some going up steep grades. We pack very light so I do not think that we ever get close to the max weight. My main concern is traveling in the mountains and not having enough power.

Here are the questions....

Will the Ram be capable of pulling the Flying Cloud that has a weight of 5400 lbs empty on any roads that have a grade? Or is the weight to close to max ? I know the MPG will drop with the extra weight but will I harm the vehicle?
Getting a new TV is not an option.

Is anyone else towing a 25 foot or longer AS with a Ram like ours? If so what are your thoughts.

I can't speak for a Ram 4.7, we have a 4.7 Toyota Tundra and pull a 25'. We traded for a new trailer last year, an extra 1500 lbs and can barely notice the difference if at all. Even though it is an extra 1500 lbs, that is not as significant when you consider the weight of the whole package, truck and trailer, plus gear and passengers which did not change.

It doesn't blast up steep grades either, but so what, it gets there just fine. A greater concern is descending steep grades and keeping speed down where it is safe. That is where trailer sway, unexpected side wind, or a sudden maneuver can be disastrous.

The Sport is the lightest of the bunch, while the 25's are standard-weight for Airstream... so you'll definitely notice the difference. Your truck is more than capable, but as you note, big hills are going to work it. If you don't already, get a transmission cooler, and possibly an engine oil cooler. If you really need to fly up the hills, you need to stay lighter, or go bigger on the truck... you've already eliminated one option.

People are towing that same trailer with smaller tow vehicles... but when it comes to what is acceptable performance it's kind of up to you.

I agree with Doug k. You will just go slower up the hills. Whats the big deal? Pull over and let other traffic pass. We should not be in any hurry especially when we are towing a trailer. That is a big part of towing safely.
