You might want to check out the sports mobile forums they do a lot of 4wd conversions. I've run into guys who tow travel trailers to a park for spouses & kids, then drive into the "bush" to hunt, surf or whatever....
Check out the Quigley Four Wheel drive van web site. They do the four-wheel drive conversions that Sportsmobile uses to make their campers. The Quigley vans are available through selected dealers. There might be one near you where you could take a look at them and get some information from the dealer concerning towing recommendations.
We tow our trailer with a E350 Ford 1 ton van with a Quiggly front end. We bought it second hand, so it came that way. We have been in a couple of situations where the 4 wheel drive came in handy as we had parked on grass and then it rained a lot and the ground got soft. It does sit up pretty high so getting in and out is a bit of a climb if your short. Steve and I are fairly tall so its not to bad.

I recently purchased a 1995 Excella Classic with a GVWR of 6800 lbs. I too am looking for a tow vehicle and I would like to know if anyone knows the tow rating for a 1990 Ford E 350 with a 7.3 IDI diesel engine (non-turbo). The one I'm looking at has been converted to four wheel drive by Quigley. Thanks, Michael
