I disagree. I think buying more expensive tires that I'll never get to use half the tread is throwing money away. If I had lots of money, maybe I would run Michelins on everything, but I don't have lots of money, so I get second best and less expensive.

It's the on road performance and reliability. That you don't want to is fine. I'm not willing to chance problems with tires on the TV. My truck is not ever less than 87% of GVWR. Over five years the annual cost increase is minimal. And the reality of hurricane evacuation makes it easy. One gets what one pays for in tires.

Never had a problem with Bridgestone or Firestone.
I will not by Goodyear because I have had problems with them.
I have had cheap tires and had good luck with them- Multi-Mile, Turbo Tech, Grand Am Radial GT- but I don't see these tires for sale anywhere anymore.
Every time I get new tires, the tire store recommends Kuhmo or Yokohama. I don't know if they recommend them because they're good tires or they make more profit on them-
Obviously you have more money than me, but if you have $1 you have more money than me-

Let me modify my statement-
Never had a problem with Bridgestone-
Firestone are noisy rolling down the highway, but the tread lasts a long time.
I have had some Sears Guardsman tires that were terrible.
I consider Bridgestone second best to Michelin and good enough- unless I can get lucky and get Michelins at or near the same price-

If I was running a half ton Id be less concerned. Duravis or LTX on the possibility of unpaved roads in event of evac. As said, cheap over the years. Having these trucks commercially I find the two above will take most anything.

What size tire did you get? Is it an "LT" tire or a "P" rated tire? When I looked up what Michelin had available in the tire size on my vehicle, they only offered a P rated LTX MS/2.

Firestone tires tried to kill me and my family. True, they don't make the same tires anymore, but I have never had any issue with Michelin tires on any vehicle. So I put Michelin on any of my vehicles before the OEM stuff even starts took worn or tired.
Rather not take the chance.

I had 2 blowouts on Michelins on a 1995 Chevy G2500 van (separate occasions a couple of months apart). Both were on a really long bridge in Louisiana (Lake Ponchartrain Causeway one time, I-12 between Hammond and Baton Rouge the other time- maybe extreme heat was a factor). Blowouts can happen with any brand of tire.
I do still believe Michelins are the best, but second best is good enough for me.

Anyone have the Michelin Defender LT 285/60 x 20? This is the only 20" tire by Michelin I could find on Tire Rack.
Looking at a 2015 Ram 2500 Big Horn but it comes with 20" rims.

I haven't used the Defender LTX but I'm glad to see they also make them in a 265/60-20 size that will fit the 2015 GMC with 20" rims. Nice to to have another option.
These are a new tire and Michelin describes them as a latest generation LTX (with Evertread compound) , so hopefully they will prove to be as good as the original LTX........... Defender LTX M/S

I am wondering about ordering the optional 20" wheels. Are there any advantages to the larger wheels other than looks? Is the ride quality better or worse with the larger wheels? It is a pricey adder.
|
Just got a '15 F-150 with 20". The diameter is 1.3" more than the standard tire/wheel so there is not much difference. Low profile tires rider rougher and the larger wheels lower the rear axle ratio and RPM a bit. My 3.55 is now a 3.39. The mileage should be a bit better by a 0.5 mpg or so. I do not believe there is much profile compromise. My stock tires are 20" version of the Michelin LTX MS/2 which is what I have on the trailer and had on my previous truck.

Sorry, Transforce AT 285/60x20.
My brother-in-law, who just retired from AT&T says they use this tire on their service 3/4T trucks, which are never checked for alignment and are abused and they get long live out of them.

With 20" rims common on 1/2T and 3/4T trucks I think in the next 2 yrs to 4yrs we'll see other manufacturers will step up to the plate.

A Firestone TransForce HT Load Range E 10 ply 20" tire to fit my odd sized Tundra wheels would be awesome.

We use the Firestone TransForce HT on our fleet of 400 or so trucks and 50 or so trailers, but they are mostly 16" wheels. Some 17's and 18's are getting in there on the newer models.

Firestone TransForce AT offer both20" and 18". Diameter is .2" larger, weight 5lbs more on the 20", the 20" has 1/16" less tread depth. Both rated at 3640lbs at 80psi. 20s cost $38 more.
I measured the height of a Ram 2500 CC with 18" and 20" rims and the distance to the bottom of the receivers were the same, 23".
