Shock info needed!

I have a 1960 Tradewind with a leaf spring axle and I am having a hard time finding out what shocks are right for this application. It had shock because the mounts are there but no shocks, so I don't have an existing shock to match. Has anyone done a shock replacement on an old leaf spring axle or know the correct shock to use?

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim, If no one comes up with the answer before light(where I am). I will get the number off the replacements for the Caravel. I know they are Monroe and I got them locally at NAPA.

This is what I put on the Caravel. Monroe 5752st. I had no issues with fit or performance.

Lee.

In all my years, I have yet to have the correct NAPA number.

Please post it so that we can others know that are not normally on this Forums.

Thanks.

Andy

Sorry Andy, I don't have the NAPA number. The number is directly off the shock.

I did a quick web search and it looks like this shock can be found at most auto part stores.

i just got off the phone with monroe. that 5732st shock application is for vertical use. they suggested looking in the steering stabilizer section of their spec. sheets to see if they make something that would work. if the shock has a metal sleeve in the end bushings, you'll need that info too.

This is a leaf spring axle and uses a vertical shock.

shocks, etc.

I don't know if this will help. If you take the shock off and measure the open length and closed length and have those dimensions, then what are the ends like, both eye hole or one with threads or both ends threaded, etc. Sometimes on older cars, you can look up in for Chevy, Ford, etc. shocks and find the length you need. Sometimes look at Summit Racing, etc for shocks also. If you have the dimensions and description the tech people might be able to help. Possibly a company that makes shocks might have a tech line for answers.

Good luck on what you are looking for.

I had the same problem with my 1983 S/S (8,000-lb GVWR). I outlined the method of comparing/contrasting, above.

I just got off the phone with my Napa salesman and he found a cross referance to the 5752 number but not the 33033. He said the 5752 shock measures 12" extended and 8" compressed.

The Airstream horizontal shock, extends from 9.5 inches to 14.5 inches.

However, it is too short to work with the "vertical shock" brackets.

It can be used, but you must cut the vertical bracket in half, overlap it and weld it back together, so that the stud to stud dimension does not exceed 14.5 inches, when that side of the trailer is jacked up.

But you must make sure that the rubber rods in the axle have not "solidified" which would restrict the wheel from dropping to it's maximum design.

Andy
