Bunk Bed $60

Thought I might share how I made and installed a bunk bed for my 73 sovereign rear bath.

I am certainly not a craftsman. My biggest constraints are that I have a family to take care of and 2 businesses to start/run so I don't have a lot of time.

Please see photos here:

I made it out of simple stuff you can find in a hardware store. the most technical tool I used was a grinder to slightly modify some parts. I also have an attachment to use my drill to use as a driver for the self tapping screws I used to mount everything into the wall/ceiling.

The two ceiling mounts and the wall mount by the head are screwed right into a rib so they are pretty bullet proof. The wall mount by the foot is screwed just into the skin. My daughter is only 9 and it feels plenty sturdy for her. She is short so the bed is on the same side as the stove. If I had put it on the other side it would have stuck out into the walkway between the beds. this way it doesn't seem to take up much room. The bed is 65x32. Now to figure out where do get a decent/inexpensive mattress.

I did have to move the light and thermostat down and out of the way. Both kids have about 18" of headroom. Against the wall I used hinges so that the bed can be lifted up and out of the way. In total the bed cost me less than $60.00.

Thanks for sharing Steven!

We've been debating on installing a bunk - it's great to know that we now have an inexpensive and simple option.

Best wishes for great adventures,

Good work Steve, and even better when you think of how you gained so much sleep space for only $60.

Into the ribs is good, and keep an eye on the upper chain attachment screws during your travels. With the chain hanging off the end of the strap one screw is carrying most of the load.

Hope you're on the road and enjoying your adventure soon.

Excellent point Kevin. I searched for an option that would put the load between 2 screws and couldn't find one. I may have to make one myself.

Steven,
Take a look at this. It is a porch swing hanger--it would distribute the load more evenly. This one is available at Lowe's.

I think i'll actually take the brackets I have, cut them in half, put screws in the outside holes, bend them, and hang the chain from the two center holes.

Rib weight limits

I was reading this blog and wondering if you knew what the weight limits were when you screw this type of fixture into the ribs?
Thanks
Carl
