Bed conversion

I was tossing around the idea of replacing my dilapidated “bed” with something new. Discussing the ideas around the station one of the guys came up with an idea of using a futon frame. I looked into the possibility and came up with a wall hugger style of frame that needs zero clearance to convert to a bed. There would be a weight savings with this application since the guy who installed his custom bed used 2X4’s for the frame. I would think that with minor alterations to a basic style frame integrated to a raised platform; this could be a feasible option. I looked through the forums and did not find any applications of this type for a bed. I could use a new sofa bed or an original groucho, but I only have a limited space to work with. Of course the wife will need some sort of comfort level with any application. Any ideas, thoughts or has any one done this sort of conversion?

Hi Beau. Even though I am not a carpenter, I was talking to a man who is going to build a frame and buy the bed slides from vintage trailer supply. I sent him some pictures of my sis-in-laws bed since hers was made from all wood and it looked to be custom built. Just an option to consider. You can buy the foam however thick you would like for comfort. Here are a couple of the pics.

I didn't use the futon frame, but I used the futon on my cough and it sleep's great.
If you have room for the frame, I say go for it.

...I installed a futon frame as a replacement for the built in couch in a prowler once...I want you to know that those mattresses can settle and can get real un-comfortable...but the worst notable thing that they did was slide downward all the time and would have to be pulled up..but you may be going with a stiff foam and just useing the frame for the support. The frame was great as an alternative(mine was metal round tubing. Airstreams...man God must have designed these bullets especially for us when he birthed us!

I found the bed rails at vintage trailer supply, this could work a lot better. Can some one post me some details pictures of their bed using the bed rail system?
