Window Gaskets; How many feet?

I ordered and used about 100 feet on the nose for my 1972 31'er.

This is enough for all of the windows and the door, but don't get careless.

The "D" gasket that Inland sells fit my frames perfectly, or at least perfect enough to satisfy me.

The small "D" gasket is wider by 1/16 of an inch. If the gasket is placed against the wall of the sash, that's the vertical part, on occasion a small overhang will take place.

If that happens, there is not much that you do except, if you wish, live with it. WHY?? Because it's many times superior than the original double flanged gasket. That's why Airstream has switched to it as well.

It causes no harm or problems in any way as far as doing a very good job of sealing the window sash.

Each year we go through about 5 miles of it, and have not heard of any overhang issues, ever, except in your case.

That "D" gasket is expected to out last the double flanged gasket, hands down.

Finish the installation, then have a couple of "cool ones" and enjoy your Airstream.

By the way, did you replace the sewer vent pipe covers, that only last 2 to 3 years.

Andy, how can that be out of interest though? My AS is stock, the windows are stock and from the picture we can clearly see an overhang ! I can't possibly be the only person to have discovered that this gasket is too broad for the window fitting ! I have no doubt it's a great product and will give it a go !

I've read you suggest using an electric drill with circular brush to remove old rubber that's hardened on. Some people suggest removing the window, I'd prefer to avoid if possible !

Taking the frame and window off the trailer is going to be the way to do the job right, taking the glass out of the frame would be insanity.

There are places where it hangs over the edge, but for all practical considerations it is a moot condition.

It fits nicely in the window opening.



Fwiw, resist any urge to stretch the strip to make it more narrow.

Do one window, your way.

Then, remove the window and do it the vast majority way.

I feel sure you will finish the task, by removing the windows, as it's so simple to do, and most i,portantly, you won'y have a need to do work that's over your head.

And beside that, if the window does not come off the trailer it will be impossible to clean the top edge and to put the gasket on properly.

The window and its frame must come off.

It is easy to get them off, two nuts on the window props, and lift the bottom of the window and it will actually fall off.....

There is a little technique involved in getting the tongue back in the groove on reinstallation, but it isn't hard.
