Sealer

I was tooling around the Airstream this morning and noticed that some of the black sealer was coming off.I know this can happen over time but i am needing to know what type of seal this is.Is it the vulkum they use to seal underneather the trailer?If i need to take a pic just let me know.Thanks.

DevomanFor small seams use "Par-bond".For large seams use "Vulkem".DO NOT use any form of "silicone sealer" on the exterior.I am not aware of Airstream using any black sealer.Andy

It might be possible that what you're seeing is sealant that has gotten dirty, which would render it black, but that is only my guess. If you call Ron, at South Jersey RV 856-697-9600, he'll be able to give you a definitive answer to any question you might have. He has been in the business a long time and is such a nice person to deal with. He has the best customer service I've found. I hope that helps you.

Those joints on my trailer are not caulked...I suspect so water can leak out? If you want to reseal them...use Vulkem or Silkaflex. It is available in a dark color.

I am just trying to figure out if anyone knows what the reason for this stuff is.Is it suposed to be totally seeled or just leave it with the slight openings running on the edges.Thanks all.

Devo, Funny you should ask this question today. I've been working on putting the belly pan back on my '73 all day. The 73's have the same gap between the radius pieces in all four corners and the other parts of the banana wrap.

One thing is for certain, if they are not sealed, rain will get in the belly pan. You know what that leads to. Why don't you ask the Airstream Dealer what that stuff is? It looks like it could be Vulkem, but I understand Airstream started using another type of sealant a few years back.
